Chapter 2 - Beneath the Cardigan

The nurse, Mrs. Gable, slowly set her pen down on the laminate desk. The quiet in the office grew heavy, punctuated only by the faint hum of the mini-fridge holding cold packs.

"Lila," Valerie said gently, keeping her tone grounded and calm. "What did your dad do to help you this morning?"

Lila swallowed hard, her small frame rigid under the scratchy hospital-grade blanket. "He put the tape on. He said I had to keep my back straight so I wouldn’t slouch anymore. He said good girls sit up straight."

Valerie’s chest tightened. She exchanged a swift, silent look with Mrs. Gable, who was already reaching for a fresh pair of medical gloves.

"Sweetheart," Mrs. Gable said softly, approaching the side of the cot. "Can I unbutton your sweater so I can take a look? I want to make sure you're safe."

Lila hesitated, her breath catching in her throat, before giving a tiny, microscopic nod.

With practiced, gentle hands, Mrs. Gable unbuttoned the pale blue cardigan. Beneath it, Lila was wearing a thin white undershirt, but the shape of her torso was unnaturally square and stiff. Mrs. Gable carefully lifted the hem of the shirt.

Valerie swallowed a gasp.

Wrapped tightly around seven-year-old Lila’s midsection—from just below her armpits down to her hips—were multiple layers of thick, heavy-duty duct tape and rigid plastic strips cut from what looked like heavy storage container lids. The tape was pulled so tight that it creased her pale skin, leaving deep red welts along the borders where it dug into her ribs.

"Oh, sweetie," Mrs. Gable whispered, her professional composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "This must be hurting you so much."

"Dad said if I wear it every day, my spine will grow right," Lila whimpered, tears finally brimming over her eyelashes and spilling onto her cheeks. "He said if I take it off, I'm disobeying."

"You're not in trouble, Lila," Valerie assured her immediately, leaning in so the girl could focus entirely on her face. "You did nothing wrong. We're going to help you get this off right now so you can breathe."

Because the tape was bound directly to her skin in several places, removing it in the nurse's office without causing further tissue damage was impossible. Mrs. Gable immediately picked up the landline phone.

"I'm calling 911," Mrs. Gable said quietly to Valerie. "And Child Protective Services."

Valerie stayed by the cot, holding Lila’s small, trembling hand. The reality of the situation washed over her like ice water. This wasn't just a case of an overly strict parent; this was severe, methodical physical abuse masked as bizarre medical discipline. As the distant wail of sirens began to echo through the cold October morning, Valerie knew that whatever happened next, she was never going to let this little girl fall through the cracks.
