Chapter 3 - The Financial Chokehold

The Sterling family's conglomerate, Sterling Global Logistics and Real Estate, was a multi-billion-dollar leviathan that controlled shipping ports, downtown skyscrapers, and municipal construction contracts across the entire tri-state area. For forty years, Evelyn Sterling had operated with absolute impunity, believing that money could buy silence, loyalty, and absolution.

She was about to learn that some debts cannot be paid off.

Three days after Brooke’s rescue, Colonel Thomas Vance activated Phase One of Operation Retribution: The Financial Chokehold.

Unlike conventional law enforcement, which moved at a snail's pace weighed down by bureaucratic red tape, Marcus’s network of military intelligence veterans and elite white-collar hackers moved like a digital shadow army. Working through a complex web of shell corporations and international regulatory loopholes, they began systematically auditing every single municipal contract tied to the Sterling family.

At 9:00 AM on a Tuesday, the city’s major financial district was hit with a coordinated shockwave.

Federal regulators, quietly tipped off by irrefutable digital evidence provided by Marcus’s team, executed simultaneous dawn raids on Sterling Global's primary accounting offices. At the same time, three major international banks—holding billions in leveraged debt for the Sterlings' ongoing skyscraper project—received freeze orders due to suspected money laundering and embezzlement of public infrastructure funds.

Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Sterling Tower, absolute panic reigned.

Evelyn Sterling slammed her palm onto the polished mahogany conference table, her face contorted with fury. "What do you mean our accounts are frozen?! Call the Mayor! Call the federal district judge! We fund their reelection campaigns!"

Her chief legal counsel, a pale, sweat-soaked man named Henderson, fumbled with his tablet. "Evelyn... it’s no use. The freeze orders didn't come from a local judge. They came straight from the federal oversight committee in Washington, backed by a special emergency directive. And... and they have proof of systemic bribery regarding the municipal port contracts."

Rowan paced the length of the room, his face pale beneath his expensive tan. "Who did this? Who has the power to bypass our local protection?"

Before anyone could answer, the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two men in sharp dark suits walked in uninvited. They weren’t police officers; they were federal liquidators accompanied by armed federal marshals.

"Evelyn Sterling," the lead agent said, holding out a thick stack of legal documents. "By order of the federal banking commission and the Department of Justice, all corporate assets of Sterling Global are hereby seized pending a full criminal investigation into corporate corruption, racketeering, and obstruction of justice."

Evelyn staggered backward, her manicured fingers gripping the edge of her chair for support. "You can't do this. Do you know who I am? Do you know who my family is?!"

"We know exactly who you are," the agent replied coldly. "And your reign is over."

As the federal agents began boxing up corporate servers and escorting terrified executives out of the building, Evelyn’s phone rang. Her trembling hand pulled the device from her designer handbag.

She swiped the screen and pressed it to her ear.

"Evelyn," a calm, low voice echoed through the speaker. It was a voice she hadn’t recognized at first, but the sheer coldness of it sent a shiver straight down her spine.

"Who is this?" she hissed, trying to regain a shred of her composure.

"You told me to take my little girl and leave," Marcus said softly from the other end of the line. "You told me your sons wouldn't face any consequences."

Evelyn’s breath hitched. "Marcus... You... You did this?"

"This is just the interest payment, Evelyn," Marcus replied. "The principal is due tonight."
