Chapter 2 - The Inside Asset

The video glowing on Marcus’s screen was high-definition, captured from a discreet smart-home security camera tucked into the crown molding of the Sterling family's grand estate living room. It showed Evelyn Sterling sitting in her velvet armchair, swirling an expensive glass of amber liquor, while her eldest son, Rowan, laughed loudly as he recounted the hospital phone call.

Brooke, Jaxson’s sixteen-year-old daughter, stood near the edge of the frame, half-hidden behind a massive pillar. Her expression was a mix of sheer horror and desperate defiance.

As Marcus watched, the audio picked up every single chilling detail. Evelyn didn't just dismiss what happened; she actively plotted how to bury it.

"The police chief owes us three favors," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with absolute arrogance. "Even if the girl manages to speak, the medical reports can be 'misplaced.' Marcus is just a former soldier with no money and no power. He thinks his little overseas medals mean something here? In this city, money writes the law."

Rowan grinned, pouring himself another drink. "Should’ve finished her off when we had the chance. The brat ruined my Italian leather shoes."

Jaxson, Brooke’s father and Evelyn’s second son, chuckled darkly. "Don't be careless, Rowan. Just let Evelyn handle the legal paperwork. If Marcus makes a peep, we’ll freeze his bank accounts, drag him through defamation court, and take permanent custody of Lily under the guise of an 'unstable guardian.'"

Brooke’s message flashed back into Marcus’s mind: You need to see this before they erase it.

Marcus didn't blink. He forwarded the encrypted video file directly to his former commanding officer, Colonel Thomas Vance—no relation, but a brother in arms who commanded a private intelligence network of retired special operators. Within three minutes, the Colonel’s secure satellite phone buzzed back with a single text: Secured, duplicated across five offshore servers. They are already digging their own graves.

Marcus stood up from the wooden chair in the hospital hallway, stepping away from Lily’s room where she was resting under heavy sedation. His mind was ice-cold, functioning with the terrifying precision of a combat veteran preparing a multi-layered siege. The Sterling family ruled this city through decades of systemic corruption, bribery, and intimidation. They owned judges, municipal contractors, and local politicians. But they had made one fatal miscalculation: they underestimated a father's absolute, unyielding resolve.

His phone vibrated. It was Brooke calling through a burner app.

Marcus answered instantly, keeping his voice low and steady. "Brooke. I got the file. Thank you."

"Uncle Marcus," Brooke whispered, her voice shaking violently on the other end. "My dad... they know I accessed the master server room. They’re looking for me. If they find out I sent it to you—"

"Listen to me carefully," Marcus interrupted, his tone carrying an absolute authority that commanded compliance. "Pack a small bag. Go out through the garden gate near the old greenhouse. My associate is waiting in a black sedan fifty yards down the lane. He has a badge with my name on it. He will take you to a safehouse where nobody—not even your grandfather—can touch you."

May you like

"Are you... are you going to destroy them?" Brooke asked, a tearful mixture of fear and hope in her voice.

"I am going to dismantle every single brick of their empire," Marcus replied quietly. "And you will never have to look at their faces again."
