Chapter 1 - The Call in the Dark

“Dad... my uncles hurt me... and Mom just stood there watching.”

Marcus Vance gripped his phone so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.

He didn’t raise his voice.

Years in the military had taught him that when someone is falling apart, panic from the person listening only makes the pain harder to bear.

“Listen to me, Lily.”

“Take a slow breath.”

“Where are you?”

A trembling voice answered through the phone.

“I’m... at the hospital.”

“Everything hurts...”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Tell me what happened.”

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Finally, Lily whispered,

“I spilled my drink on Uncle Rowan’s shoes.”

Marcus swallowed hard.

“Then what?”

“They took me outside...”

Her voice became almost too quiet to hear.

“They... took turns hurting me...”

Another pause.

“Mom saw everything.”

Marcus said nothing.

Moments later, a nurse gently took the phone.

Twelve hours later, Marcus stood inside the pediatric intensive care unit.

The doctor quietly placed a medical file on the table.

“Your daughter has a long recovery ahead of her.”

Marcus nodded and walked back to Lily’s bedside.

She slowly reached out with the few fingers she could still move.

“Dad...”

“I’m sorry...”

He carefully held her small hand.

“No.”

“You’re not the one who owes anyone an apology.”

Four days later, his phone rang again.

It was Evelyn Sterling.

Her voice was calm... almost amused.

“I heard you’re back in town.”

“My sons aren’t going to face any consequences.”

“Take your little girl and leave. You should be grateful we’re letting you walk away.”

Marcus remained silent.

Then Evelyn laughed softly.

“Oh... and Rowan asked me to tell you something.”

She paused.

Her voice turned cold.

“If you come looking for him...”

“...next time, he won’t stop where he did this time.”

The call ended.

What Evelyn didn’t know...

Marcus had answered on speaker.

And, by pure military habit, he had recorded every single word.

He didn’t rush to confront anyone.

He didn’t make threats.

Instead, he called his former commanding officer.

After listening to the recording, the man was silent for a long moment.

Then he finally spoke.

“Assemble your team, First Sergeant.”

Marcus waited.

The Colonel continued.

“We’re not starting with a confrontation...”

“...we’re starting with something the Sterling family never saw coming.”

That same night, while the Sterlings celebrated their belief that nothing could bring them down, a secret video file arrived on Marcus’s phone.

The sender was Brooke, Jaxson’s teenage daughter.

There was only one message attached:

“You need to see this before they erase it.”

May you like

Marcus opened the video.

The first few seconds made him stop breathing.
