Chapter 6 - The Web Unravels

The struggle was brief but violent. Eleanor was desperate, but Claire was fueled by an primal rage that no amount of calculation could match. Claire slammed Eleanor’s wrist against the hard wooden edge of the hospital nightstand. Eleanor shrieked as her fingers involuntarily opened, the syringe dropping to the floor and shattering.
Before Eleanor could recover, Claire grabbed her by the hair and shoved her backward into the heavy bathroom door. The impact left Eleanor dazed, gasping for breath as she slid to the tile floor.
The door to the hospital room burst open. Detective Miller and three uniform officers rushed in, their weapons drawn.
"Don't move!" Miller yelled, targeting Eleanor.
Claire stood over her former friend, her breathing heavy, her chest heaving. "She’s the insider, Miller. She’s the one who planted the evidence in my apartment. She’s the one who sold out my family."
Miller looked at Eleanor, disgust evident on his face. He nodded to the officers, who quickly pulled Eleanor to her feet, slapping handcuffs onto her wrists. As they dragged her out, Eleanor glared at Claire, her face twisted in malice. "You think you’ve won, Claire? You think this ends with me? Julian Vance has layers of shell companies you haven't even dreamed of! The money is already moving!"
"Let it move," Claire said coldly. "As long as it moves away from my son."
Once the room was quiet again, Miller walked over to Claire, handing her a bottle of water. "You're a hell of a woman, Claire. We checked the data logs from the server room you shut down. You didn't just stop Julian; you triggered a global freeze on all Vance Global assets. The federal government is stepping in. The trust fund is secure. It’s locked down under your sole signature now."
"And Daniel?" Claire asked, her voice cracking slightly as she looked out the window at the sunrise breaking through the storm clouds.
"He's cooperating," Miller said softly. "He's singing like a bird to avoid a lifetime federal sentence. He’s detailing every bribe, every deepfake, and every illegal transaction Julian ever made. He knows he ruined his life, Claire. But he wants to make sure you and Ethan are safe."
Claire walked back to Ethan's bed. The little boy stirred, his eyelashes fluttering against his cheeks. He let out a soft sigh, turning his head toward her.

"Mommy?" Ethan whispered, his voice small, weak, but beautifully real.
Claire dropped to her knees by the bed, tears finally flowing freely down her face as she wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly against her chest. "I’m here, baby. I’m right here. You’re safe now. The monsters are gone."
