Chapter 4 - The Price of Treason

Before Julian could react, Claire raised the taser and fired. The two prongs slammed directly into Julian’s chest. The high-voltage current ripped through him, his muscles locking instantly as he let out a strangled cry, dropping the vial onto the carpeted floor. He collapsed against the desk, his tablet shattering as he fell.

Claire didn't waste a second. She dove for the floor, her hands sweeping across the carpet until her fingers wrapped around the cold glass of the silver vial. It was intact.

"Claire, behind you!" Daniel shouted.

The security guard from the lobby had entered the server room, his gun drawn. Claire scrambled behind a server rack just as a bullet shattered the glass partition next to her head. The sound was deafening in the enclosed space, followed by the shrill scream of a fire alarm triggered by the shattered glass dust.

"Drop the weapon!" the guard shouted, advancing down the aisle.

Claire was trapped. The server aisle was a dead end. She looked at the vial in her hand, then at the massive, humming server rack next to her. A red lever marked Emergency Power Cutoff / Halon Fire Suppression sat behind a thin pane of plastic.

She didn't hesitate. She used the base of the taser to smash the plastic and pulled the lever.

Instantly, a deafening klaxon went off, and the rows of servers began to shut down one by one, plunging the room into darkness as a thick, suffocating cloud of Halon gas began to pump into the room from the ceiling vents. The gas was designed to starve fires of oxygen, which meant human beings inside had less than two minutes before losing consciousness.

The guard choked, dropping his weapon as he scrambled back toward the elevator doors to escape the gas. Claire, holding her breath, ran back to the desk where Daniel was tied. She used a letter opener from the desk to slash his zip-ties.

"Go! Get out!" Daniel gasped, coughing violently as the oxygen levels plummeted.

"I'm not leaving you to die, Daniel," Claire hissed, grabbing his arm and dragging him toward the emergency stairwell door behind the server banks. "You have to answer for what you did to our family, but you’re going to do it in front of a judge."

They burst through the heavy steel door into the stairwell, gasping for the fresh, cool air blowing up from the lower levels. Behind them, Julian Vance was crawling out of the server room, weak and gasping for breath, his empire collapsing into data silence as the mainframes completely powered down, wiping the unauthorized deepfake databases and financial transfers they had used to ruin Claire.

As they descended the stairs, the sound of police sirens echoed from the streets below. Miller had called for backup the moment he realized Claire had left the hospital.

When they reached the lobby, the building was surrounded by tactical vehicles, their red and blue lights painting the rain-slicked streets in neon hues. Miller stood at the center of the perimeter, a medical blanket wrapped around his shoulders, his face grim.

"Claire!" Miller called out, rushing forward as she emerged from the building, holding Daniel upright. "We got the warrants. We raided Vance’s secondary facility uptown. We found the source of the deepfakes."

Claire handed the silver vial to Miller. "Get this to Dr. Aris. Now. My son is waiting."

Miller handed the vial to a waiting motorcycle officer, who sped off into the rainy night, sirens wailing. Then, Miller turned his attention to Daniel, his expression hardening. "Daniel Bennett. You've been a ghost for three years. It's time to talk."

Daniel looked at Claire, his eyes filled with a mixture of regret and terror. "Claire, I swear, I never wanted them to hurt Ethan. I thought if I disappeared, they would leave you alone."

May you like

"You let me believe you were dead, Daniel," Claire said, her voice like ice. "You let your sister poison our son for money. You don't get to play the victim anymore."

As the officers handcuffed Daniel and led him away, Claire stood alone in the rain. She had the antidote, she had the evidence to clear her name, and the Vance empire was crumbling. But as she watched the flashing lights, a cold realization settled over her. Julian Vance was a powerful man, but he was a businessman. The physical extraction of her son, the precise drugging at the resort, the planting of evidence in her apartment—that required an insider. Someone who knew her daily routine perfectly. Someone who wasn't currently in handcuffs.
