Chapter 9 - The Wedding Bells

The autumn air was crisp and clear, carrying the sweet scent of fallen leaves and blooming chrysanthemums. Exactly one year after the night that changed our lives forever, Mark and I stood under a simple wooden arch adorned with white roses in the backyard of our new home.

There were no massive corporate crowds, no fake socialite friends, and certainly no toxic parents in attendance. Just a small, intimate gathering of true friends, trusted neighbors, and the two people who mattered most in the world.

Leo stood proudly beside Mark as his best man, clutching a small velvet box containing our wedding rings with utmost concentration. Mia stood by my side as my maid of honor, looking stunning in a lavender dress, holding a bouquet of wildflowers she had picked herself.

"Do you, Sarah, take Mark to be your lawfully wedded husband, in joy and in sorrow, through every storm life brings?" the justice of the peace asked, his voice warm and steady.

I looked into Mark's eyes—eyes that had stayed by my side through taser darts, syndicate threats, and sleepless nights of court hearings. I saw absolute devotion, unwavering loyalty, and unconditional love.

"I do," I said, my voice ringing clear and strong across the yard.

"And do you, Mark, take Sarah to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do," Mark replied, smiling broadly.

When the rings were slipped onto our fingers and the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, the applause was deafening. Leo and Mia rushed forward, tackling us both in a joyous group hug that nearly knocked the wooden arch over.

We weren't running from shadows anymore. We weren't hiding behind locked doors or fearing what lurked in the dark. We were standing in the warm sunlight of our own making, surrounded by love that was real, pure, and unbreakable.
