Chapter 5 - Turning the Tide

Mark stood at the top of the basement stairs, holding a heavy pneumatic nail gun he must have grabbed from my father's workbench. Beside him stood Leo and Mia, wide-eyed but holding heavy iron wrenches.

"Let her go, or I swear I'll drive a three-inch framing nail straight through your skull," Mark shouted, his voice echoing menacingly off the concrete walls.

The intruder holding me hesitated, glancing up at the stairs. In that split second of distraction, I didn't hesitate. I dropped my weight, slammed my heel down onto his foot with all my might, and drove my elbow backward into his stomach.

He grunted, his grip loosening just enough for me to duck and scramble away toward the stairs.

"Fire!" Mark yelled.

A loud, pneumatic hiss filled the basement, followed by a sharp thwack. A framing nail embedded itself deeply into the wooden doorframe right next to the intruder's head, missing him by a mere inch.

Enraged, the man drew his pistol and aimed it toward the stairs. "You little bastard—"

Before he could pull the trigger, Mia—showing a courage I never knew my twelve-year-old sister possessed—hurled her heavy iron wrench down the stairwell. It caught the man square in the wrist, sending his pistol clattering across the concrete floor.

"Run!" I screamed, sprinting up the stairs and grabbing Leo and Mia by their hands. Mark fired the nail gun one more time as a warning shot, then bolted backward up the steps behind us, slamming the heavy basement door shut and dropping the exterior deadbolt into place.

We raced through the kitchen and out through the shattered sunroom doors into the backyard, plunging into the cool, dark embrace of the suburban night.

"Where do we go?" Leo panted, tears streaming down his cheeks as we hid behind the detached wooden tool shed.

"We need to get off the property and find a phone that isn't bugged," Mark said, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he clutched his bruised chest. "Your parents' car is gone, but the neighbors—"

Before Mark could finish his sentence, the red and blue flashing lights of police cruisers suddenly illuminated the end of our street, cutting through the darkness with a blinding intensity.
