Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

Six months later, the dust from the federal trial had finally begun to settle. My parents had been sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole, their names forever disgraced in the financial world.

Mark and I had moved out of the terrifying shadow of our childhood home into a modest, sunlit three-bedroom townhouse across town. It didn't have crystal chandeliers or imported marble countertops, but it had a warm, cozy kitchen that smelled constantly of cinnamon rolls and homework help.

Leo was thriving in his new elementary school, having won a blue ribbon in his class science fair. Mia had joined the middle school debate team, channeling her fierce protective instincts into sharp, articulate arguments.

As for Mark and me, we had scaled back our grand wedding plans and opted for something much more meaningful.

"Are you sure you don't want a big ceremony?" Mark asked, leaning against the kitchen counter as I stirred a pot of pasta sauce.

I turned around, wiping my hands on a dish towel, and smiled. "I don't care about a big ceremony, Mark. I just want to marry you. Besides, we have two kids who need us to save up for their college funds now."

Mark chuckled, walking over and wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling me close. "College funds it is. But we are still taking that honeymoon. Even if it's just a weekend trip to a cabin in the mountains."

"Deal," I whispered, resting my head against his chest.

For the first time in my life, I felt a profound sense of peace. The nightmare of that locked house had tried to destroy us, but instead, it had forged an unbreakable bond between the four of us. We had survived the worst of humanity, and in doing so, we had built a real family out of the ashes.
