Chapter 8 - Confronting the Truth

Thiago watched through the cameras as Dr. Castelo was let into the house by Clara. The doctor looked annoyed, his expensive suit looking out of place in the warm, lavender-scented living room.
"Where is Mr. Carvalho?" Castelo asked, his voice dripping with condescension.
"He is at work, Doctor," Clara replied politely. "I can take a message."
Castelo walked over to Alice’s playpen, looking down at her. "I came to sign the pre-surgical evaluation papers. I see you've been moving her. I told Mr. Carvalho that she must remain completely still to avoid further nerve damage. What are you doing with her?"
"I am helping her stretch, sir," Clara said, her voice steady but respectful. "She is responding. Her toes moved today."
Castelo laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "Nonsense. It's a involuntary reflex. You are an untrained maid, young lady. Your ignorance could cripple this child permanently. If I see you manipulating her limbs again, I will have Mr. Carvalho fire you, and I will report you to the police for practicing medicine without a license."
Clara stood her ground, her chin lifted. "I studied pediatric therapy for three years, Doctor. I know the difference between a reflex and a conscious motor response. She is trying to walk."

Through the camera, Thiago saw Castelo raise his hand threateningly toward Clara.
"That's enough!" Thiago roared, slamming his car keys onto his desk. He sprinted out of his corporate office, ignoring his assistants, and sped back to the mansion.
