Thiago wanted to run home immediately, to throw open the doors and thank Clara on his knees. But a sudden, chilling realization stopped him.
The specialist doctor who had been treating Alice, Dr. Alvaro Castelo—a highly prestigious, incredibly expensive neurologist—had repeatedly told Thiago that Alice’s condition was entirely hopeless. He had insisted on a series of highly invasive, experimental surgeries costing upwards of half a million dollars, claiming it was the only minuscule chance she had.
Why had Dr. Castelo been so adamant that physical therapy was useless? Why did he want to rush an eleven-month-old infant into a dangerous operating room?
Thiago’s analytical mind began to connect the dots. Dr. Castelo was a major shareholder in the private surgical clinic where the operations were scheduled to take place. If Alice healed through non-invasive physical therapy, Castelo would lose a massive payout and a high-profile medical trial case.
