Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Despite the newfound happiness in the house, the past still cast long shadows. The divorce with Victoria was turning ugly. Her lawyers were demanding a massive settlement, claiming that James had subjected her to emotional distress and a hostile environment.
Worse, Victoria was threatening to drag the children into court to testify about the "unstable environment" of the household, using the kitchen incident as evidence of neglect.
James sat in his study late one night, rubbing his temples in frustration. The corporate world he could handle with his eyes closed, but the threat of his children being hurt further made him feel utterly powerless.
A soft knock on the door broke his concentration. Sophia entered, carrying a tray with a mug of hot chamomile tea.
"I saw the light under your door," she said quietly, placing the tray on his desk. "You look exhausted, James."
Over the past few weeks, they had dropped the formal titles when the children weren't around. She had become his confidante, the one person who truly understood the delicate emotional state of his family.
"Victoria's lawyers are being vicious," James admitted, leaning back in his leather chair. "They want to bring Emily and Ethan into a deposition. They want to prove that I'm an unfit father because I allow the house to be 'chaotic.' They are using you against me, Sophia. They're calling you an unqualified positive influence that undermines parental authority."
Sophia sat down in the chair across from him. She didn't look afraid; instead, her eyes shone with a fierce, protective determination.
"Let them try," Sophia said softly but firmly. "I have kept a daily log of the children’s progress since the day I started. I have records of Emily’s speech milestones, Ethan’s emotional breakthrough journals, and even statements from their primary pediatrician noting the immense improvement in their psychological health."
James looked at her, stunned. "You did all that?"
"I love them, James," Sophia said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I wouldn't let anyone hurt them. Not Victoria, not anyone."

James reached across the desk, his hand covering hers. Her skin was warm, small, but filled with an incredible strength.
"Thank you, Sophia," James whispered, his eyes locked onto hers. "For everything."
