Chapter 4 - Sophia's Sanctuary

The next two weeks brought a radical change to the Carter estate. Victoria was gone, having moved into a luxury penthouse in Manhattan while the divorce proceedings began. The house felt lighter, as if a heavy suffocating blanket had been lifted from the rooms.

James promoted Sophia to the position of Head Caretaker and House Manager, giving her full authority over the estate’s domestic operations. More importantly, she was officially placed in charge of the twins' daily schedules.

Unlike Victoria, who had filled the children’s days with rigorous etiquette lessons and strict silence, Sophia filled the house with life.

The Changes in the Carter Household:The Music Room: The grand piano, which had been locked since Clara’s passing, was opened. Sophia didn't play perfectly, but she knew simple, cheerful melodies that encouraged Emily to hum along.

The Gardens: Sophia helped Ethan plant a small patch of sunflowers in the backyard, giving him a reason to run outside every morning to check their growth.

The Dining Table: Formal, silent dinners were replaced by casual meals at the kitchen island, where James actually sat down with his children instead of eating in his study.

One rainy Tuesday evening, James came home early from the office. Instead of the usual eerie silence, he heard the sound of laughter coming from the living room.

He walked in to find a massive fort built out of cushions, silk sheets, and heavy blankets. A flashlight gleamed from inside the fabric fortress.

"Who goes there?" a small voice challenged from inside. It was Ethan.

"It's just the tax collector," James joked, dropping his briefcase on the sofa.

Sophia’s head popped out from under a blue velvet sheet. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and she looked beautiful in the soft glow of the flashlight. "We're guarding the kingdom, Mr. Carter. There are dragons in the hallway."

James smiled, a genuine, deep smile that felt foreign to his face. "May I seek asylum in your kingdom?"

Emily peeked out from behind Sophia, holding a plastic sword. "Only if you know the secret password!"

James looked at Sophia, his eyes softening. "I think the password is... cinnamon."

May you like

Emily giggled and opened the blanket flap wide. "Correct! Come in, Daddy!"

As James crawled into the fort, squeezing his large frame into the cozy space between his children and Sophia, he realized that for the first time in a year, he didn't feel lonely.
