Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Doubt

The following morning, Evan decided to postpone his morning conference call to observe Rachel’s session with the twins. He sat quietly in the corner of the playroom, notebook in hand, observing how Rachel used simple balance boards and resistance bands made of soft fabric to encourage core activation.

However, peace in the Roth household was rarely permitted to last uninterrupted.

At precisely 10:00 AM, the heavy oak front doors swung open, followed by the sharp, click-clack of designer heels echoing across the marble foyer.

Elena Vance strode into the hallway.

Elena was Evan’s late wife’s sister—and self-appointed guardian of the family’s social and medical standards. Ever since the accident, Elena had taken it upon herself to audit every aspect of Evan’s parenting, convinced that a single father without female intuition was bound to ruin the boys. Furthermore, Elena was the one who had personally recommended Dr. Sterling and the elite medical team currently managing the twins' case.

“Evan!” Elena called out sharply, tossing her designer handbag onto the entryway console. “Why didn't anyone answer the intercom? I’ve been ringing for five minutes!”

Evan stepped out of the playroom, closing the door softly behind him to shield the boys from the impending friction. “Elena. I didn't expect you today.”

“Clearly,” Elena said, marching down the hall, her sharp eyes scanning the immaculate interior before locking onto Evan. “I’m here because Dr. Sterling’s office called my husband. They said you canceled the boys’ scheduled neurological evaluation for this morning. Evan, have you lost your mind? That appointment took three months to secure!”

“I canceled it because we’re trying a different approach,” Evan said evenly, keeping his tone measured to avoid waking the children’s curiosity.

Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her jaw dropping slightly. “A different approach? What on earth does that mean? Are you taking medical advice from horoscopes now? Those boys have severe spinal cord trauma! They need specialists, not—not whatever makeshift nonsense you’re cooking up in secret!”

“It’s not nonsense, Elena,” Evan said, his voice hardening as the corporate CEO persona began to surface. “It’s working.”

Before Elena could demand further explanation, the playroom door clicked open. Rachel stepped out into the hallway, holding a stack of colorful sensory blocks. She nodded politely to Elena, maintaining her usual calm composure.

Elena’s eyes narrowed instantly as she looked Rachel up and down, taking in the simple cotton blouse and comfortable trousers.

“Ah,” Elena said, her voice dripping with condescension. “So this is the domestic help I’ve been hearing about. The housekeeper.”

“Her name is Rachel,” Evan corrected, stepping slightly in front of Rachel.

“And what is the housekeeper doing in charge of physical rehabilitation?” Elena snapped, turning her wrath back toward Evan. “Evan, this is criminally negligent! If those boys suffer a secondary spinal injury because some unqualified maid decided to play doctor, you won't just be sued—you’ll be investigated by child services!”

Rachel didn't flinch. She stepped forward calmly, looking Elena directly in the eye. “Mrs. Vance, the boys are not fragile glass. Every movement we do is designed to stimulate neural plasticity without placing undue pressure on the T12 vertebra. If you’d care to step inside, you can see for yourself how Aaron and Simon are progressing.”

“I don't need to see parlor tricks from someone who cleans toilets for a living!” Elena hissed, her face flushing with anger. “Evan, fire her this instant. If you don't, I will personally call Dr. Sterling and file an emergency petition for a family medical review.”

The atmosphere in the hallway plummeted to freezing. Evan’s eyes flashed with cold fury. Nobody spoke to his staff like that in his house—especially not when that staff was achieving what neurosurgeons deemed impossible.

“Elena,” Evan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that usually made board members shudder. “This is my home. These are my sons. And Rachel stays.”
