Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at Dawn

"POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Voices shouted through megaphones outside. Heavy boots slammed onto the wooden porch steps.
Marcus looked toward the front door, then down at his knife, his eyes wild with the panic of a cornered animal. He made a desperate, lunging movement toward Daniel.
"POLICE! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"
The front door was breached with a violent crash. Four heavily armed officers poured into the hallway, weapons raised, tactical flashlights cutting through the dim house.
"DROP THE KNIFE! NOW!"
Marcus froze, the red laser sights from three police rifles dancing across his chest. The pain in his leg, combined with the overwhelming force in front of him, shattered whatever violent resolve he had left. The knife fell from his fingers, clattering onto the floorboards.
"Down! On your stomach! Hands behind your back!"
Two officers tackled Marcus to the ground, pulling his arms behind him and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. He groaned in pain as they shifted his broken leg, but no one offered him sympathy.
Detective Thomas Vance walked through the shattered front doorway, pulling off his leather gloves. He looked around the chaotic kitchen—the blood on the floor, the plaster dust falling from the ceiling, the bullet hole above the cabinets.
His eyes found me. "Evelyn. You look like hell."
"I've felt better, Thomas," I said, a tiny, exhausted smile touching my lips.
An officer approached Melissa, who immediately began wailing. "Officer! Help me! I was kidnapped! They made me do it! My husband and his mother tried to kill me!"
Detective Vance walked over, looking down at her with utter contempt. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small digital recorder he had been handed by an officer outside.
"Save it, Mrs. Vance—or rather, Mrs. Miller," Vance said coldly. "We tapped your burner phone two hours ago when Daniel’s coworker reported unusual financial activity and threats made to Daniel's work account. We have the entire conversation you had with Marcus recorded from outside the house. You're done."
Melissa’s wails abruptly cut off. Her mouth snapped shut. Her eyes went completely hollow as the officer pulled her up, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping the cuffs into place.
As they dragged Melissa out into the flashing lights of the night, she passed Daniel. She looked at him, searching for a single shred of pity, a single lingering spark of the control she used to exert over him.
Daniel didn't even look her in the eye. He looked straight past her, his hand resting firmly on my shoulder.

"Take her away," Daniel said quietly.
Paramedics burst into the house a minute later, rushing over to check Daniel's head wound and my elevated pulse. For the first time in three agonizing days, the overwhelming weight on my chest began to lift.
