Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Web

I handed Daniel the heavy Maglite flashlight. "Stay here. If she moves, hit her. If Marcus comes up those stairs, use it."

"Where are you going?" Daniel asked, rubbing his raw, bloodied wrists.

"To call the one person who can end this properly," I said.

I didn't call 911 immediately from my phone. I walked to the home office in the back of the house, locked the door, and opened the bottom drawer of my desk. Inside was a small black address book. I flipped through the pages until I found the direct cell phone number for Detective Thomas Vance.

Thomas was an old friend of my late husband. They had served in the local police precinct together thirty years ago before Thomas moved up to lead the regional financial crimes and domestic violence task force.

I dialed the number. It rang twice.

"Vance," a gravelly, sharp voice answered.

"Thomas. It's Evelyn," I said, keeping my breathing controlled.

"Evelyn? Good Lord, woman, I heard you were in the hospital! Are you alright?"

"I was. But right now, I am at my house. My home has been invaded. Daniel has been assaulted. A man named Marcus and my daughter-in-law, Melissa, are attempting to extort my estate and family trust at gunpoint. Marcus is currently incapacitated in my basement, and Melissa is pinned in my kitchen."

There was a half-second pause on the line before Thomas's tone shifted from friendly concern to absolute tactical precision. "Are they armed?"

"They had a handgun. It's secured. Marcus has a knife. Thomas... there is more. Melissa mentioned a fake notary stamp and financial conservatorship papers. This isn't just a robbery. This is a organized operation."

"I am three miles away," Vance said instantly. "Dispatching four units right now, silent sirens. Stay locked in that room if you can, Evelyn. Do not engage."

"Hurry, Thomas," I said, and hung up.

When I stepped back into the kitchen, the scene had shifted.

Melissa was sitting on the floor, her face buried in her knees, rocking back and forth. The realization of her situation was finally crashing down on her. The law was coming. Her reputation, her status, her control—everything was about to be obliterated.

Daniel stood over her, holding the heavy flashlight, his eyes fixed on the basement door.

Down below, heavy footsteps sounded on the wooden steps. Marcus was crawling his way back up, dragging his shattered leg behind him, cursing savagely with every breath.

"Evelyn..." Marcus spat as his bloody hand gripped the edge of the basement door frame. "You... you dead old bitch..."

He dragged himself into the hall, his face pale from shock, holding his tactical knife tightly in his right hand. He was injured, but he was huge, desperate, and dangerous.

"Don't come any closer," Daniel shouted, stepping between Marcus and me.

"Get out of the way, kid," Marcus growled, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "I'm taking the car keys and I'm leaving. Anyone tries to stop me gets gutted."

Before Marcus could make a single step forward, the front windows of my house exploded with red and blue light.

The low, heavy rumble of police cruisers pulling onto the lawn vibrated through the floorboards.
