Chapter 5 - Echoes of Deception

The noise of Marcus falling echoed up the stairwell like a detonation.

I didn't waste a second. I didn't check to see if he was conscious. I scrambled back up the stairs on my hands and knees, my lungs screaming for air, my heart hammering like a war drum.

As I reached the top landing, I heard a sharp gasp from the kitchen.

"Marcus?" Melissa’s voice wavered, sharp and terrified. "Marcus, what was that?!"

I burst through the door back into the hallway, the heavy Maglite swinging in my right hand.

Melissa turned, her face pale, the revolver wobbling in her trembling fingers. "Where is he?! What did you do?!"

She was panicked, her eyes darting between the dark basement door and me. She pointed the gun at my chest, but her hand was shaking so violently that the barrel was dancing.

"Put it down, Melissa," I said, stepping into the yellow light of the kitchen. My voice was no longer that of a victim. It was cold, dark, and utterly merciless.

"Stay back! I'll shoot you! I swear to God I'll shoot you!" she shrieked.

From the floor, Daniel saw his chance. Despite his bound hands and feet, he lunged forward with his entire body weight, slamming his shoulders into the back of Melissa's knees.

"Aaagh!" Melissa shrieked as her legs folded. She pitched backward, her arms flailing.

BANG.

The gun went off. The bullet tore through the ceiling drywall, showering plaster dust down like fresh snow.

The revolver slipped from her hand, clattering across the floorboards. I leaped forward, kicking the gun under the heavy refrigerator, far out of her reach.

Melissa hit the floor hard, coughing in the dust, her hair wildly disheveled. She scrambled backward until her spine hit the lower cabinets, looking up at Daniel and me with wide, terrified eyes. The aristocratic, cold demeanor she had maintained for years was completely shattered.

"Daniel! Daniel, please!" she began to sob, her tears instant and dramatic. "She tricked us! Marcus threatened me! He made me do this! He said he would hurt Lily if I didn't help him get the money!"

It was her final, desperate performance.

Daniel sat up against the wall, breathing heavily, plaster dust in his hair. He looked at his wife—the woman he had chosen, the woman for whom he had turned his back on his own mother—and for the first time in seven years, he saw her clearly.

"You tagged my mother in that photo while she was dying in a hospital," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm, deadened by pure disgust. "You called her a drama queen while she was on life support."

"I... I was trying to keep up appearances! I didn't want Lily to worry!" Melissa cried, reaching out toward him with manicured hands. "Daniel, I love you! We are a family!"

"No," Daniel whispered, turning his head away from her. "We aren't."

From the basement, a groan echoed up the stairs. Marcus was still breathing.

I pulled the heavy kitchen shears from the drawer and walked over to Daniel, quickly cutting through the thick duct tape binding his wrists and ankles.

As soon as his hands were free, Daniel didn't hesitate. He pulled me into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face into my neck. "I'm so sorry, Mom. God, I'm so sorry."

"I know, son," I whispered, holding his head tightly. "I know. But we're not done yet."
