Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Six months after the horrific events of the baby shower, the trial of The State of California v. Evelyn Vance, Arthur Vance, and Brianna Vance commenced in the downtown superior courthouse.

Media vans lined the streets outside, and camera crews clamored for a glimpse of the disgraced family. The courtroom was packed to capacity every single day.

I decided to attend in person for the final days of testimony. Dressed in a sharp, professional navy blue blazer with my head held high, I walked into the courtroom escorted by private security and Eleanor. I no longer looked like the terrified, broken girl standing by the edge of that pool. I was a surviving mother, fierce and unshakable.

When I entered, my mother looked up from the defense table. Her hair was starkly graying at the roots, her skin pale from months under fluorescent prison lights. For a fraction of a second, her eyes met mine—the same piercing, critical glare she had given me my entire life. But this time, there was no power behind it. Only sheer, unadulterated panic.

The prosecution’s case was bulletproof.

Claire took the stand first, delivering a chilling, blow-by-blow account of the attack with the poise and clinical precision of an experienced labor-and-delivery nurse. She described the exact moment my mother’s fist struck my stomach, the sickening sound of my water breaking, and the horrifying cruelty of my father and sister telling me to “float there and think about selfishness.”

When the unedited 4K video footage was played on the massive courtroom monitors for the jury, a collective gasp echoed through the room. Several jurors wiped away tears. Brianna broke down into loud, sobbing wails on the stand, clutching her own newborn baby—who had been born in custody a few months prior and placed temporarily into child protective services—while cross-examining prosecutors dismantled every single lie her defense attempted to spin.

Even Marcus took the stand as a hostile witness for the prosecution. He testified candidly about years of systemic emotional and financial abuse within the Vance household, corroborating my claims and sealing my parents' legal fate.

After four grueling days of testimony, the jury deliberated for a mere three hours before returning with their verdict.

As the foreperson stood up to read the paper slips, absolute silence fell over the courtroom.

“On the count of attempted murder in the second degree against Evelyn Vance: Guilty.” “On the count of aggravated assault of a pregnant individual against Evelyn Vance: Guilty.” “On the count of reckless endangerment and depraved indifference against Arthur Vance: Guilty.” “On the count of conspiracy and accessory to assault against Brianna Vance: Guilty.”

Gavel strikes hammered down like thunderbolts of divine justice.

Evelyn buried her face in her hands and began to weep hysterically, realizing her social empire was ashes. Arthur stared blankly ahead at the wooden defense table, completely broken. Brianna sobbed uncontrollably as court bailiffs stepped forward to escort them down to holding cells.

As my mother was being led past my row of seating, she turned her head, her voice cracking with desperate venom. “Savannah! Please! We’re your family! Have mercy!”

I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply looked her dead in the eye and said calmly, “You taught me how to survive, Mom. Now live with the results.”
