Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Within seventy-two hours, the Vance family’s carefully constructed illusion of perfection imploded into a national scandal.

Because of the high-profile nature of the crime—a wealthy grandmother and her golden-child pregnant daughter orchestrating the near-drowning of the other pregnant twin over an $18,000 maternity fund—local news stations picked up the story. Within days, headlines blared across digital news outlets and morning talk shows: “Baby Shower Brutality: Mother Arrested After Punching Eight-Month-Pregnant Daughter and Watching Her Sink.”

Eleanor, my powerhouse lawyer, ensured that the court documents filed against my mother, father, and Brianna were airtight. The charges were staggering:

Evelyn Vance (Mom): Attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated assault of a pregnant individual, and felony child endangerment.

Arthur Vance (Dad): Aiding and abetting, depraved indifference, and reckless endangerment.

Brianna Vance: Conspiracy to commit assault, accessory after the fact, and incitement.

While I rested in a secure, guarded recovery wing of the hospital with my newborn son—whom I named Leo, meaning lion, because he had braved the storm with me—the Vance household was undergoing a very different kind of reckoning.

Social media didn't take long to do its work either. The video Claire filmed went viral on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). Within hours, the local bakery that had supplied Brianna’s custom cake publicly severed all ties with her, posting an online statement denouncing her cruelty. My mother’s country club suspended her membership indefinitely, citing “conduct unbecoming of a member.” Even my father’s architectural firm placed him on indefinite, unpaid leave, distancing themselves from the toxic fallout of his actions.

On the fourth day after Leo’s birth, a visitor arrived at my hospital room door, escorted by a security guard.

It wasn't a police officer or a lawyer. It was Marcus, Brianna’s husband—or rather, my soon-to-be former brother-in-law.

Marcus looked shell-shocked. His hair was disheveled, his designer suit wrinkled, and the arrogant, cocky demeanor he usually carried around family gatherings had completely vanished. He stood in the doorway, holding a bouquet of flowers that looked entirely out of place.

“Savannah… can I come in?” Marcus asked quietly, his voice trembling.

I looked up from where I was softly rocking Leo in the hospital chair. I tightened my grip around my son. “Make it quick, Marcus. What do you want?”

Marcus stepped inside, closing the door softly behind him. He didn't look at me; instead, his eyes drifted down to the baby sleeping peacefully against my chest. A look of deep shame washed over his face.

“I didn't know,” Marcus whispered, running a hand over his face. “Swear to God, Savannah, I didn't know the extent of it. When your mother called me from the police station demanding bail money, she lied. She told me you fell in and threw a tantrum. But then… then I saw the news. I saw the video.”

“And?” I raised an eyebrow, my voice devoid of warmth. Marcus had spent years standing quietly by while my parents belittled me and elevated Brianna. He had enjoyed the status of being married to the “favored” daughter.

“And I filed for divorce this morning,” Marcus said flatly, looking up to meet my eyes. “I’ve packed up Brianna’s things and left them with her defense attorney. I love my unborn child—who is due next month—but living with that family, being blind to how evil they really were… I can't do it anymore. I’m cooperating fully with the prosecution, Savannah. I’m handing over all our joint financial records, including the times your mother funneled your college fund into Brianna’s accounts without your permission.”

I stared at him, stunned. The empire my parents had built on intimidation, favoritism, and financial abuse was cannibalizing itself from the inside out.

“Do whatever you need to do for your own child, Marcus,” I said coldly. “But do not ever expect me to forgive or forget what your wife and my parents tried to do to my son and me.”

Marcus swallowed hard, nodded slowly, and backed out of the room without another word. The house of cards had officially fallen, and the rubble was burying them all.
