Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Five years later.

The sound of children’s laughter echoed across the sun-drenched lawn of our coastal home.

Leo, now six years old with bright, curious eyes and a mop of curly brown hair, was excitedly running across the grass, flying a bright red kite high into the clear blue sky.

“Hold the string steady, Leo! Let the wind catch it!” I called out from the patio, smiling as I watched him beam with pride when the kite soared higher into the clouds.

My life was full, vibrant, and overflowing with genuine love. Over the past few years, I had built a successful freelance design agency, bought our home outright, and forged a chosen family of loyal, supportive friends who cherished me for who I was.

Claire remained our closest confidante, practically an honorary aunt to Leo, never missing a birthday, holiday, or milestone. And remarkably, my path had also crossed with someone special—a kind, grounded pediatrician named David who volunteered at the local community clinic, who loved Leo as his own, and who valued partnership, kindness, and mutual respect above all else.

We weren't married yet, but as David walked up the driveway carrying a bag of groceries and smiling warmly at me, I knew our future together was secure, bright, and built on solid ground.

“How’s the birthday boy doing?” David asked, kissing the top of my head before walking over to help Leo reel in his kite.

“He’s flying high,” I replied softly, leaning against the porch railing.

As I looked out across the yard—at my son laughing in the sunshine, at the warm, safe home we had built with our own hands, and at the peaceful horizon stretching out before us—I knew the nightmare of the past was completely behind us.

The woman who had sunk beneath the surface of that pool years ago was gone. In her place stood a mother, a survivor, and a victor.

We had made it through the dark, and our happily ever after was finally, beautifully, ours.
