Chapter 8 - A New Dawn at Whitfield House

Spring arrived at the Whitfield estate with a burst of color. The cold, grey stone of the mansion was framed by blooming cherry blossoms and endless fields of yellow daffodils.

For Lily’s fourth birthday, there was no grand, formal gala. There were no snobbish executives or cameras.

Instead, the lawn behind the gardener’s cottage was filled with balloons, a bouncy castle, and the sound of children’s laughter. Nathaniel had invited the children of all the estate staff, along with their families.

Lily ran across the grass, her white dress stained with grass and chocolate icing, wearing a lopsided paper crown. She was chasing Mrs. Alvarez’s grandson, her dark curls flying wild.

Elena stood by the buffet table, watching her, a glass of lemonade in her hand.

"She looks like she belongs here," a voice said beside her.

Elena turned to see Nathaniel. He had rolled up his sleeves, his tie was gone, and there was a smudge of chocolate on his cheek from when Lily had kissed him earlier. He looked happier, younger, and entirely at peace.

"She does," Elena smiled, reaching up with a napkin to gently wipe the chocolate from his cheek. "You both do."

Nathaniel caught her hand, kissing her palm before letting it go. "The board of the Whitfield Foundation approved the new initiative today."

Elena’s eyes lit up. Over the winter, she and Nathaniel had worked together to establish the Rose and Elena Foundation—a non-profit dedicated to funding IVF treatments and legal protection for low-income mothers who had been victims of medical malpractice or clinic negligence.

"That’s amazing, Nathaniel," she said, her heart swelling with pride. "We’re really going to help people."

"You are going to help people," Nathaniel corrected her, his eyes shining with admiration. "You are the director. I’m just the guy with the checkbook."

"And the heart," Elena added softly, stepping closer to him. "Don't forget the heart."

Nathaniel smiled, his arm sliding around her waist, pulling her close against his side as they watched their daughter blow out the candles on a giant, messy chocolate cake.
