Chapter 4 - The Scientific Truth

The three days it took for the private laboratory to process the DNA samples were the longest days of Elena’s life.
She remained in the service wing, refusing to move into the main house despite Nathaniel’s insistence. She felt like an intruder, a ghost haunting a legacy that was never meant to be hers. She spent every second holding Lily, memorizing the scent of her hair, the sound of her laughter, terrified that the law or the sheer force of Nathaniel’s wealth would snatch her away.
Nathaniel, meanwhile, had placed the estate under lockdown. Vivian Carr had attempted to return twice, accompanied by her family’s lawyers, demanding that Nathaniel honor their engagement and accusing Elena of "extortion" and "manufacturing a fraudulent heir." Nathaniel had met them at the gates himself, flanked by his personal security and the managing partner of the state’s most formidable law firm. He had served Vivian with a restraining order and officially terminated their engagement.
On the fourth morning, a black sedan pulled up to the front steps of Whitfield House. Dr. Aris, a trusted family physician who had overseen the DNA collection, stepped out holding a sealed manila envelope.
Nathaniel called Elena to the library.
When Elena entered, she found Nathaniel standing by the window. He looked as though he hadn't slept in days. The fire was crackling in the hearth, throwing warm, dancing shadows across the mahogany shelves.
"Elena," Nathaniel said, turning to face her. "Dr. Aris is here."
Elena sat on the edge of the leather armchair, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Lily was in the kitchen with Mrs. Alvarez, completely unaware of the storm raging around her.
Dr. Aris slid the document out of the envelope. He looked at both of them with a expression of profound, quiet awe.
"Mr. Whitfield, Ms. Morales," the doctor said, adjusting his glasses. "The results are absolute. There is a 99.99% probability of paternal relationship between Nathaniel Whitfield and Lily Morales. Furthermore, using the preserved genetic profile we have on file for the late Rose Whitfield, Lily is a perfect genetic match. She is, biologically, your daughter."
Elena felt the world tilt. She didn't scream or cry; she simply collapsed inward, her head falling into her hands as a silent, chest-heaving sob tore through her.
It was true. The child she had raised, the child she had bled and cried for, was genetically the daughter of the billionaire standing across the room and his dead wife. She had no biological connection to the baby she had carried in her womb.
Nathaniel closed his eyes, a single, heavy tear slipping down his cheek. He fell to his knees beside Elena’s chair, not touching her yet, but close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him.
"Elena," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Please. Look at me."
She slowly lifted her tear-stained face. "Are you... are you going to take her?" she whispered, the terror in her voice raw and bleeding. "Please, Nathaniel. She’s all I have. I have nothing else. I love her so much."
"No," Nathaniel said instantly, his voice cracking. He reached out and gently took her hands, his grip steadying her trembling fingers. "Never. You are her mother. You carried her, you protected her, you loved her when the rest of the world didn't even know she existed. I would never, ever take her away from the woman who gave her life."

He looked toward the window, his eyes shining. "But she is also my daughter. She is the piece of Rose and Claire I thought was gone forever. I want to be her father, Elena. But I want to do it with you. Not against you."
Elena stared at him, seeing the profound sincerity in his eyes. For the first time in three days, the cold weight of terror in her chest began to melt, replaced by a strange, trembling warmth.
