Chapter 6 - Vivian's Last Stand

The peace they had built was shattered three weeks later when a prominent tabloid published a scathing front-page expose:
"THE MAID'S MILLION-DOLLAR BABYSITTER: Did Housekeeper Swindle Billionaire Widower with Faked Embryo Story?"
The article, clearly sourced from a bitter and vengeful Vivian Carr, accused Elena of being a master manipulator who had targeted the vulnerable, grieving billionaire. It claimed the DNA results were fabricated, that Elena had stolen the Rose Locket from the estate vaults, and that she was using her child to secure a permanent hold on the Whitfield fortune.
Within hours, reporters and paparazzi swarmed the gates of Whitfield House.
Elena stood in the center of the cottage living room, holding a crying Lily close to her chest as the flashes of cameras glittered through the trees at the edge of the property. Her old fears came roaring back, suffocating her.
"I have to leave," she whispered to herself, her breath catching. "They’re going to ruin her. They’re going to make Lily think she’s a lie."
She began throwing Lily’s clothes into a suitcase, her hands shaking violently.
Suddenly, the front door of the cottage flew open, and Nathaniel strode in. His expression was thunderous, his eyes dark with a rage so intense it made the very walls of the cottage seem to tremble.
He saw the suitcase. He saw the terror in Elena’s eyes.
In three long strides, he was across the room. He took the suitcase from her hands and tossed it onto the floor, then reached out and took her by the shoulders.
"Elena, stop," he commanded, his voice raw. "Do not run. Do not ever run from me."
"They are destroying us, Nathaniel!" Elena cried, tears spilling over her cheeks. "Your world... your money, your ex-fiancée... they are going to tear Lily apart! I can't let her grow up being called a scam, a maid's trick!"
"She is a Whitfield!" Nathaniel roared, his voice shaking the room. He softened instantly, his hands moving to cup her face, his thumbs gently wiping away her tears. "And she is your daughter. Nobody—nobody—is going to touch either of you. I swear it."
He looked deep into her eyes, his gaze burning with an intensity that made her breath hitch. "I have tolerated Vivian’s pettiness for years because of her family’s connections. But she has crossed a line she can never return from. I am going to end this. Now."
That afternoon, Nathaniel called a live press conference in the ballroom of the Whitfield corporate headquarters. He did not hide. He did not issue a dry, legal statement.
Standing before dozens of cameras and journalists, Nathaniel held up the sapphire locket. Beside him stood the lead investigator of the state medical board and the chief of police.
"Six years ago, my wife and daughter were taken from me," Nathaniel said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakable authority. "But through a miracle of science and the grace of a woman more honorable than anyone in this room, my daughter survived. Elena Morales did not steal. She did not manipulate. She loved, she protected, and she raised my daughter with a dignity that money can never buy."
He leaned forward, his eyes locking onto the cameras. "To Vivian Carr and those who helped her spread these malicious falsehoods: my legal team has already filed suits for defamation, harassment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. We will pursue these charges to the fullest extent of the law. I will spend every single penny of my fortune to ensure that anyone who attempts to harm my daughter or her mother spends the rest of their lives in a courtroom or a prison cell."

He paused, his expression softening as he spoke his final words directly to the camera—and to the woman he knew was watching from the cottage.
"Elena Morales is not 'the help.' She is the heart of my home. And I will spend the rest of my life protecting her."
