Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF ARROGANCE

Two uniformed officers from the Savannah Police Department, accompanied by agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, stepped into the sanctuary from the side entrance. Marcus had coordinated the timing perfectly.

"Arthur Pendelton," the lead detective announced, pulling out a set of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, insurance fraud, corporate embezzlement, and falsifying legal documents."

Arthur backed away toward the altar, looking like a cornered animal. "You can't do this! I have rights! I’m a senior partner!"

"Not anymore," Julian Vance said coldly. "I spoke with your managing partners an hour ago. When they saw the audit reports provided by Charles's legal team, they terminated your partnership immediately and turned over all your corporate files to the District Attorney."

The officers stepped up, grabbed Arthur’s arms, and yanked them behind his back. The metal handcuffs clicked shut with a sharp, final sound that resonated through the quiet cathedral.

As they dragged him down the aisle past hundreds of staring, disgusted faces, Arthur caught sight of his daughters standing beside me.

Lucy didn't look angry. She didn't look triumphant. She simply stood tall, holding her sisters close, watching the man who had abandoned them finally face the consequences of his actions.

"Lucy! Rachel! Tell them!" Arthur pleaded frantically as he was pushed past us. "Tell them I’m your father!"

Lucy looked him dead in the eye and said quietly, but firmly:

"Our father died the day our mother did."

The crowd murmured in agreement as the police pushed Arthur through the heavy oak doors and into the back of a waiting police cruiser.

Outside, news cameras—tipped off by the sudden police movement at the high-profile wedding—flashed rapidly, capturing the disgraced executive being shoved into the backseat of the patrol car. The story would lead the evening news across the state by nightfall.

Inside the church, Julian Vance walked over to us. The proud billionaire looked visibly shaken, but when he looked down at my granddaughters, his expression softened completely.

"Charles," Julian said, bowing his head slightly in genuine remorse. "I am deeply, deeply sorry. I was blind to the snake living under my roof. If there is anything—anything at all—that my family can do to make amends for the pain my daughter and that monster caused these girls, name it."

"We don't want your money, Mr. Vance," I said gently. "We just wanted the truth."

Julian looked at Lucy, Rachel, and April, his eyes filled with respect. "You have your mother's courage, young lady," he whispered to Lucy. "She raised heroes."
