Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OF EVELYN

The following Monday, I took the girls to the local family court to file for emergency temporary custody.
The court clerk, a woman named Martha who had known my family for decades, looked at the paperwork with tears in her eyes. "Charles, is this true? Did Arthur really abandon them at the cemetery?"
"He did, Martha," I said quietly, keeping my voice low so the girls, who were sitting on a bench nearby drawing pictures, wouldn't hear. "He declared in front of two hundred people that he was placing them in foster care if no one stepped up."
"That monster," Martha muttered, her pen flying across the official documents. "I'm granting the emergency order immediately. Arthur will be served with a summons, but honestly, given his statement, he probably won't even contest it."
She was right. Two days later, a notice arrived from Arthur’s lawyer. He was voluntarily surrendering all parental rights to Lucy, Rachel, and April—on one condition. He wanted them to sign away any claim to Rose’s primary estate, including her personal effects and the family trust.
"He wants us to sign this so he can liquidate everything before his wedding," my attorney, David Vance (no relation to Evelyn), explained as we sat in his office downtown. David was a sharp, veteran family attorney and an old friend.
"Can he do that?" I asked.
"Not legally—not if we contest it," David said, leaning forward. "Rose's trust was explicitly structured to transfer to the children upon her death, with you named as the secondary trustee if Arthur failed his fiduciary duties. These audio recordings and financial logs you brought me... Charles, this isn't just a custody battle. This is evidence of grand larceny and fraud."
"I don't just want him in jail, David," I said coldly. "I want him exposed. He wants a fresh start with his new bride. He wants the world to think he's a grieving, respectable businessman who made a tragic sacrifice."
David smiled faintly, a hard edge in his eyes. "Evelyn Vance is the daughter of Julian Vance, the CEO of Vance Logistics—one of the biggest logistics firms in the Southeast. Julian is a deeply religious, traditional man who values family reputation above everything else. He’s funding the entire lavish wedding at the Savannah Historic Cathedral. If Julian finds out Arthur is a thief who abandoned his own daughters on the day of his wife's funeral..."

"He'll destroy him," I finished.
"Precisely," David said. "We hold our ground. We let Arthur think he's getting away with it. We let him proceed with his grand wedding plans. And then, we deliver the truth where it hurts him most."
