Chapter 8 - THE ALTAR OF TRUTH

Saturday arrived under a crisp, golden autumn sky. St. John’s Cathedral was breathtaking. Massive floral arches of white orchids and roses lined the stone steps. Rows of polished black limousines clogged the historic streets of Savannah. Georgia’s political elite, business magnates, and society figures filed into the cathedral, dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns.
Arthur stood at the front of the grand altar. He wore a crisp black tuxedo with a white rose boutonnière. He looked commanding, victorious, smiling broadly as he greeted the arriving guests. Beside him stood his best man, a fellow executive from his firm.
At 2:45 PM, a black SUV pulled up to the side entrance.
I stepped out, dressed in my finest dark suit. Behind me came Lucy, Rachel, and April. Lucy wore a simple navy blue dress, holding her younger sisters' hands firmly. They didn't look afraid. They looked proud.
We walked into the back of the cathedral just as the organ began to play the opening chords of the bridal processional.
The heavy oak doors at the front opened, and Julian Vance entered, escorting his daughter Evelyn down the long aisle. Evelyn was radiant in a custom lace gown, holding a bouquet of white lilies. Arthur’s eyes beamed with triumph as he watched his future—and Julian’s fortune—walk toward him.
When Julian and Evelyn reached the foot of the altar, the priest raised his hands.
"Dearly beloved," the priest began, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings, "we are gathered here today in the sight of God and these witnesses to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony."
The ceremony proceeded seamlessly. The vows were read. The rings were produced.
"If anyone here knows of any reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony," the priest announced to the packed cathedral, "let them speak now, or forever hold their peace."
The cathedral was dead silent. Arthur smiled, preparing to turn to his bride.
"I object," a deep, quiet voice rang out from the back of the church.
A collective gasp echoed through the three hundred guests. Heads snapped toward the rear doors.
I stepped down the center aisle, holding Lucy’s hand. Rachel and April walked close behind us. The crowd parted in shock.
Arthur’s face turned bright red. "What is the meaning of this?!" he yelled, taking a step forward. "Security! Get this crazy old man and these kids out of here right now!"
Security guards moved forward, but before they could lay a hand on me, Julian Vance raised his hand, halting them instantly.
"Stand down," Julian ordered, his powerful voice commanding the room. He turned to look at me, then down at the three little girls. "Charles. What are you doing here?"
"I am here to deliver a message from my daughter, Rose," I said clearly, my voice carrying into every corner of the church. "The woman Arthur left to die while he planned this wedding. The woman whose children he abandoned at her grave three weeks ago."
Evelyn gasped, looking horrified. "Father! Stop this nonsense! He's trying to ruin my day!"
"Silence, Evelyn," Julian snapped, his eyes cold as ice. He looked at me. "Speak, Charles."
I pulled out a small remote control provided by Marcus and pressed a button.
High above the altar, the large projection screens—originally set up to display high-definition video of the ceremony to the rear rows—flickered. The church lights dimmed automatically as Marcus fired up the main audio-visual system from the sound booth.
Suddenly, Rose’s face appeared on the massive screens, ten feet tall.
The entire cathedral froze.
"If you are watching this," Rose’s voice echoed through the high stone arches, crystal clear and trembling with emotional power, "it means my husband, Arthur Pendelton, has tried to erase my children and build a new life on the money he stole from them."
Audio clips began to play through the church's state-of-the-art sound system.
Arthur’s own voice boomed over the speakers:
"...I’m not giving up the rest of my life to raise children whose mother is dead... They're going into foster care... Julian is old and gullible. He thinks I'm a saint..."
Then came Evelyn’s recorded voice:
"Once the old girl kicks it... we can use your daughters' trust to buy the Buckhead estate before he even thinks to look at your personal ledgers..."
Whispers erupted like wildfire through the pews. Society ladies covered their mouths in horror. Business executives stared at Arthur in utter disgust.
Arthur’s face drained of all color. He looked wildly around the room, sweating profusely through his tuxedo collar. "It's fake! It's AI! It's a setup!" he screamed, his voice cracking. "Evelyn, baby, listen to me—"
He reached out to grab Evelyn’s hand, but Julian Vance stepped between them.
Julian didn't shout. He didn't raise his fist. He simply looked at Arthur with a cold, terrifying disgust that chilled the entire room.
"You called me old and gullible," Julian said softly, his voice carrying clearly over the hushed crowd. "You used my daughter. You robbed your own motherless children. And you dared to bring your filth into this holy house."

Julian turned to Evelyn, who was now sobbing hysterically, realization crashing over her as she realized her father had seen the whole truth.
"The wedding is over," Julian announced loudly to the entire congregation. "And Arthur Pendelton’s career, reputation, and freedom are finished."
