Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

The corporate headquarters of Vance Logistics was a thirty-story tower of blue glass and polished granite downtown. At 8:45 AM, the lobby was already buzzing with rumors. The news of police cruisers outside the Vance family estate the night before had leaked to the financial press, and stock prices were dropping by the minute.

I walked through the revolving doors flanked by two of the city's top corporate litigators and Vance Sterling himself.

The security guard at the desk, an older man named Arthur who had worked there for two decades, looked up in surprise. "Mrs. Vance? I... I was told your badge was deactivated this morning."

"Try it anyway, Arthur," I said gently, handing him my card.

He swiped it. The light flashed red.

Vance stepped forward, handing Arthur a legal injunction signed by a state judge less than an hour prior. "This is an emergency order restoring Mrs. Vance’s access as head auditor and minority shareholder representative pending the board investigation."

Arthur looked at the document, then looked at me, nodding slowly. "Floor twenty-eight, ma'am. They're all in the main boardroom."

When the elevator doors opened on the twenty-eighth floor, the tension was thick enough to choke on. Through the frosted glass walls of the boardroom, I could see Daniel standing at the head of the long oak table, gesturing wildly to six board members. Carmen was sitting near the back, looking pale and regal in a tweed suit, though her hands were trembling around her teacup.

I didn't knock. I simply pushed the doors open.

The conversation died instantly.

"What is the meaning of this?" Carmen demanded, rising to her feet with all the cold authority she could muster. "Elena, you have no right to be here. This is a private corporate meeting."

"It was a private corporate meeting," Vance corrected, stepping into the room behind me. "Until you turned the company treasury into your personal piggy bank, Carmen."

Daniel went white. "Uncle Vance..."

"Don't 'Uncle' me, boy," Vance barked. "You sat on the throne my father built and let your mother strip it to the bone."

"This is absurd!" Daniel turned to the board members, his voice rising in desperation. "My wife is having some kind of emotional breakdown! She walked out on our family last night after an argument at our daughter's birthday party, and now she's trying to sabotage my career!"

I walked slowly to the head of the table, pulling a stack of bound financial reports from my briefcase and dropping them onto the center of the oak surface with a heavy, satisfying thud.

"Page twelve," I said, looking directly at the board chairman, a silver-haired elder named Mr. Henderson. "That’s the offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under 'M. Vance Design.' Over the past four years, six point two million dollars were transferred directly from our emergency operations reserves into that account to pay off Marisol’s gambling debts in Macau."

Mr. Henderson opened the folder, his eyes widening as he scanned the line items. The other board members leaned in, their faces turning to stone.

"Page twenty-four," I continued, my voice steady and unyielding. "The double-billed invoices for the Asian shipping lanes. Daniel signed off on every single one of them, knowing the excess funds were being funneled into a political action committee supporting his state senate bid."

"Lie!" Carmen spat, her composure cracking completely. "She fabricated these! She’s trying to destroy us out of spite!"

"I am the chief auditor, Carmen," I said, meeting her venomous glare with pure frost. "I don't fabricate numbers. I expose them. And right now, the police are outside waiting to execute a search warrant on your home and Marisol’s studio."

Daniel sank into his chair, his eyes hollow, looking like a man who had just watched his entire world crumble before his eyes.

May you like

"You ruined us," he whispered.

"No, Daniel," I said, leaning down until I was eye-level with him. "You ruined yourself the second you let your sister hold a knife over our child and told me to leave."
