Chapter 10 - The Horizon

That evening, after the guests had left and the sun had dipped below the ocean horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, orange, and gold, I sat on the back deck wrapped in a soft cashmere sweater.

Isla was fast asleep in her room upstairs, dreaming peaceful dreams in a house where fear had no entry.

My laptop was open on the table beside me, displaying a notification from my legal team: the final liquidation of the old Vance family trust was complete. The remaining assets had been liquidated and transferred into an irrevocable educational trust for Isla, completely beyond the reach of Daniel, Carmen, or Marisol for the rest of their lives.

They had tried to make me feel powerless. They had tried to strip my dignity, take my child, and drive me into the night with nothing to my name.

But they had forgotten one crucial truth: you cannot destroy a woman who knows her own worth, who keeps her own receipts, and who knows how to fight for her child.

I took a sip of wine, feeling the cool ocean air touch my face, and looked out at the dark, gleaming water.
