Chapter 1 - The Frosting and the Knife

At my daughter's first birthday, my sister-in-law stabbed the pink three-tier cake and screamed that I had stolen forty-seven things from her. Then my husband stood beside her, in front of our guests, and told me I should leave my own house that night without my baby.
Pink frosting splashed across the floor.
Isla sat frozen in her high chair, buttercream on her fingers, fear in her eyes.
Marisol stood over the ruined cake in a black dress, breathing hard, the knife trembling in her hand.
Forty-seven times, she yelled. The promotion. The house. The baby. Even my brother. You take everything and smile like you are innocent.
I waited for Daniel to come to me.
He went to her.
Marisol, put it down, he said softly.
Softly. Like she was the one who needed protecting.
Carmen crossed her arms. Do not act innocent, Elena.
Guests drifted toward the door. One cousin raised a phone.
Turn it off, I said.
He did.
Then Daniel finally looked at me. No panic. No apology. Only blame.
You humiliated her at the hospital gala.
I corrected a fake donation report.
Carmen's face tightened. You embarrassed family.
Then Marisol dropped the knife onto the cake board and said what they had all come there ready to say.
I want her gone.
I almost laughed.
Gone from my own house?
Carmen stepped closer. This house was my son's before you trapped him.
Daniel said nothing.
That silence cut deeper than the knife.
Then he made the mistake that ended our marriage.
Stay somewhere else tonight, he said. Isla stays here. She needs stability.
Fifteen witnesses heard him. Three security cameras recorded him. And he still thought I was the one with no power.

He reached for my wrist. I kissed my daughter's curls and smiled.
Because I already had the evidence his family had buried for years.
