Chapter 8 - A Bright Future

Five years after the party that changed everything, Daniela Salgado Architects opened its second branch.

To mark Lucía’s fifth birthday, we didn't hold a party at a private club with gold-rimmed glasses and soft judgments.

We held it in the backyard of my new house—a sunlit home I had designed and built myself.

There were colorful balloons scattered across the grass, laughter ringing through the air, my parents grilling food, and Lucía running around with frosting smeared across her face, just as I had always wanted.

Rodrigo was there, laughing with my father near the grill. He brought Lucía a small wooden toy chest he had built with his own hands.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the garden, Lucía ran up to me, her bright blue eyes shining with pure joy.

"Mommy! Look what Daddy made for me!" she cheered, pointing at the toy chest.

I knelt down, wiping a spot of chocolate frosting from her cheek, and pulled her close into a hug.

"It's beautiful, sweetie," I whispered into her hair.

Looking around at my parents, my daughter, and the life I had crafted through resilience, dignity, and truth, I realized that the trap laid for me five years ago hadn't broken me—it had set me free.

Lucía clapped her hands in delight as her birthday candles were lit, her light bright and clear, belonging entirely to a future built on love.
