Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

The second envelope contained no medical reports. Instead, it held thick stacks of printed emails, text messages, financial ledgers, and bank statements.

Rodrigo pulled out the top pages. The room was deathly quiet as he read through the email chain titled Birthday Structure.

"What is this..." he murmured, his face turning pale.

"Read it, Rodrigo," I said. "Read what your mother and Paulina have been discussing for the last three months while you were out late 'working'."

Teresa stepped forward, reaching to grab the papers. "Rodrigo, don't read that! It's private—"

"Stay back, Mom!" Rodrigo snapped, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. It was the first time in his life he had ever raised his voice at her.

He read line after line. The plan was laid out in ruthless detail:

The Suspicion Phase: Teresa planting doubts about Lucía’s eyes over months to distance Rodrigo emotionally from his child.

The Public Trap: Hosting the 1st birthday at the country club, ensuring influential family friends were present to maximize the public humiliation.

The Legal Maneuver: Pre-drafted divorce filings prepared by Teresa’s personal attorney, designed to claim infidelity, deny child support, and strip me of custody based on manufactured emotional instability.

The Rejection Fund: A financial transaction showing a wire transfer from Teresa’s private account to an offshore entity—a retainer paid to a private investigator tasked with digging up dirt on my family, which came back completely empty.

And worst of all, an email from Paulina Mier to Teresa, sent just four days ago:

"Once Daniela breaks at the party and runs out, Rodrigo will have no choice but to file immediately. My father has already cleared the spot for Rodrigo at the firm once this mess is cleaned up."

Rodrigo looked at Paulina. Paulina abruptly stood up, grabbed her designer bag, and walked out of the banquet hall without looking back. Her parents followed closely behind, their heads bowed in shame.

"Daniela..." Rodrigo’s voice broke completely as he looked at me, tears streaming down his face. "I didn't know... I swear I didn't know about this plan."

"You didn't write the emails, Rodrigo," I replied, holding Lucía tightly against my chest. "But you enabled them. Every time you stayed silent, every time you looked at our daughter with suspicion, you participated."
