Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Teresa stood alone in the center of the room. The elegant, commanding matriarch was suddenly reduced to a figure of intense scrutiny. The very friends she had invited to witness my humiliation were now whispering behind their hands, staring at her with disgust.

"This is ridiculous!" Teresa shouted, her voice trembling with rage. "I did what was necessary to protect this family! To protect our bloodline! You came from nothing, Daniela! You don't belong here!"

"You're right, Teresa," I said calmly. "I don't belong here. Because my family values loyalty, dignity, and love—things your money could never buy."

I turned to Rodrigo.

"My lawyer has already filed for legal separation," I said quietly, taking a small key out of my pocket and dropping it on the table next to the documents. "The apartment key. Lucía and I are moving back to my parents' house tonight."

"Daniela, please, no!" Rodrigo pleaded, taking a step toward me. "We can fix this! I'll cut my mother off! I'll do whatever it takes!"

"You should have stood up for your daughter three months ago, Rodrigo," I said softly. "You chose your mother's approval over your family's dignity. Now you have to live with that choice."

I adjusted Lucía on my hip. My daughter looked up at me with those beautiful, striking blue eyes—eyes inherited from my great-grandmother, a quiet detail Teresa never bothered to ask about because she never cared to learn anything about my family.

Lucía smiled, reaching up to touch my face.

I turned my back on Teresa Aranda, on Rodrigo, and on the quiet judgment of the country club. I walked out of the banquet hall into the cool night air, leaving the wreckage of their arrogance behind.
