Chapter 8 - Healing Small Fractures

Sophie came home from the hospital four days after the court hearing. Her face was still bruised, but the physical pain was fading. The emotional wounds, however, ran deep.

For the first few weeks, she slept in my bed, clutching her favorite blanket and waking up terrified whenever the house creaked at night.

“Mom?” she asked one night, her voice tiny in the dark. “Is Grandma coming back?”

I rolled onto my side and pulled her close, wrapping my arms securely around her. “No, baby. Grandma and Aunt Amber are never, ever coming near you again. The police made sure of it, and the judge made a big rule that keeps them far away forever.”

“Did I do something bad by finding the blue folder?” she whispered, a tear slipping onto my arm.

My heart shattered. I sat up and lifted her chin so she could look me in the eyes.

“Sophie, look at me. You saved us. You were so brave, so smart, and so strong. Finding that folder and keeping that piece of paper in your pocket exposed the truth. You did absolute nothing wrong. You are my hero.”

She stared at me for a long moment, scanning my face to see if I was telling the truth. Slowly, the tension in her small shoulders melted away, and she buried her face in my chest, sobbing softly—not out of fear, but out of relief.

We started seeing a pediatric child psychologist named Dr. Sarah Al-Mansoor, who specialized in trauma. Week by week, through art therapy and play, Sophie began to rebuild her confidence.

She drew pictures of our new life. In her drawings, the dark basements and heavy doors were replaced by sunny gardens, big open windows, and two little figures holding hands under a bright yellow sun—just like the drawing she had started on her birthday before the party was ruined.

Meanwhile, my company was extraordinarily supportive. When my boss learned what had happened, he granted me three weeks of fully paid administrative leave to handle the court cases and care for Sophie, assuring me that my promotion and new position in the new city were waiting for me whenever we were ready.
