Chapter 7 - Uncovering the Network

Although the custody battle was won, the criminal investigation was far from over. Over the next three weeks, police uncovered the full extent of the operation my mother had built to control our lives.
Detective Vance invited me to the station to review the final police report before formal grand jury indictments were handed down.
“It was larger than we thought,” Vance explained, spreading documents across his desk. “Your mother had opened four different offshore bank accounts using your identity, accumulating over forty thousand dollars in debt that she planned to use as evidence of your financial instability in court.”
“Where did she get the money to pay off the notary and the clinic staff?” I asked.
“From your late father’s life insurance policy,” Vance revealed. “She had kept a secret trust fund meant for you and Sophie, funneling it into her legal defense fund and paying off accomplices.”
The depth of her betrayal was staggering. She had used money left by my father—money meant to secure Sophie’s future—to systematically break us apart.
Amber, faced with severe felony conspiracy charges, agreed to a plea bargain. She gave a full confession detailing how my mother had coached her to push the cake into Sophie’s face at the birthday party to destroy the paper Sophie had found.
“Amber admitted that when Sophie found the blue folder in the study, your mother panicked,” Vance said. “She signaled Amber to create a distraction. Amber pushed the cake, but didn't realize how hard she was shoving her. When Sophie fell and hit the chair, your mother told Amber to play it off as a joke.”
“And the older fracture?” I asked, my voice tight.

“Eight months ago, Sophie refused to sign a false statement saying you left her alone at night,” Vance said softly. “Your mother grabbed her arm, Sophie pulled away, slipped on a rug, and hit the corner of a coffee table. Instead of taking her to a hospital immediately, your mother kept her locked in the basement room for six hours until the swelling went down enough to take her to a corrupt urgent care clinic.”
Hearing the details made my heart bleed for my little girl. But it also replaced any lingering guilt I had about prosecuting my own family with pure, uncompromising resolve. They belonged behind bars.
