Chapter 5 - The Confrontation Before Court

The morning of the hearing, the courthouse steps were slick with rain. I walked up the marble stairs alongside David Ross, my heart hammering against my ribs. Sophie was in a safe house protected by child protective services and an off-duty officer until the court reached a decision.
As we reached the glass doors of the courthouse, a sharp voice cut through the damp air.
“Lauren!”
I turned. My mother stood under a large black umbrella, dressed impeccably in a dark grey suit, looking every bit the grieving, worried grandmother. Beside her stood Amber, looking nervous and chewing her lip.
“Mother,” I said, keeping my voice steady.
She stepped closer, dropping her voice to a low, intense whisper. “You are destroying this family over a misunderstandings. Do you really think a judge will believe a stressed, overworked single mother over her own family? I raised you, Lauren. I know how fragile you are.”
“You hurt my daughter,” I said, staring directly into her eyes. “You locked her in a basement. You broke her bone and forged my name to cover it up.”
My mother’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. “I gave that child stability! You were going to drag her across the state away from everything she knows! She belongs with me, where she is safe!”
“She was never safe with you,” I replied, my voice calm, grounded, and filled with a certainty I hadn't felt in years. “You don't love her, Mother. You just want an object to control.”
Amber stepped forward, her hands shaking. “Lauren, please… Mom said if we didn't do this, you’d take Sophie away and we’d never see her again! She said you were sick!”
“Amber, shut your mouth!” my mother snapped, turning on her daughter with sudden viciousness.
I looked at my sister with pity. “She used you, Amber. Just like she tried to use Sophie. And now you’re going to pay the price for her crimes.”
Before my mother could respond, Detective Vance walked up the stairs, flanked by two uniformed officers.
“Evelyn Reed,” Vance said, addressing my mother. “You are under arrest for forgery, conspiracy to commit fraud, and filing false legal petitions.”
My mother’s face went pale, but she quickly smoothed her jacket. “This is an outrage! My lawyer will have this dismissed in five minutes!”

“Your lawyer is currently reviewing the notarization confession from Richard Vance,” Detective Vance replied calmly as an officer cuffed her hands behind her back. “I don't think he’s going to be much help today.”
As they led my mother down the steps toward a waiting police cruiser, Amber burst into tears, sinking to her knees on the wet pavement. I didn't look back as David and I walked through the heavy doors into the courthouse.
