Chapter 8 - Operation Homecoming

The Seattle Convention Center was buzzing with corporate elites, politicians, and tech moguls sipping artisan coffee and murmuring about artificial intelligence algorithms. Overhead, enormous digital screens flashed the glowing logo of Vanguard Logistics.

Inside the subterranean security sector, far beneath the applause of the grand ballroom, Julian Sterling sat shackled to a cold metal chair in an interrogation cell. His face was bruised, his clothes rumpled, his eyes hollow. He had resigned himself to his fate—a life wiped clean, his memories scrubbed, recycled into another puppet for the Directorate.

Suddenly, the heavy electronic cell door hissed open.

Julian didn't look up, assuming it was another handler coming to administer the neural wipe. "Just get it over with," he muttered hoarsely. "I don't care anymore."

"You're going to care about this," a soft, familiar voice echoed across the sterile concrete room.

Julian's head snapped up. His eyes widened in absolute disbelief. Standing in the doorway, dressed in a crisp security uniform with an executive badge pinned to her chest, was me.

"Clara?" he choked out, struggling against the heavy iron shackles binding his wrists. "Are you out of your mind? What are you doing here? If security catches you—"

"Security won't catch me," I interrupted, stepping forward and sliding Eleanor's silver signet ring into the biometric wall terminal. With a sharp beep, the heavy magnetic locks on Julian’s chair disengaged, and the shackles sprang open with a loud clatter.

Julian stumbled forward, catching himself against the table, staring at me as if I were an apparition. "You... you came back for me? After everything I put you through? After you found out my entire life was a lie?"

"Your life was a lie, Julian," I said, reaching out and grabbing his hands, which were freezing cold. "Your past was fabricated. Your handlers lied to you. But your daughter and I? We are real. And I refuse to let them turn you into a ghost."

Before Julian could answer, the red emergency klaxons overhead began to strobe violently. A robotic voice boomed across the facility speaker system: SECURITY BREACH IN SUB-LEVEL FOUR. LOCKDOWN INITIATED.

"They know we're here," Julian gasped, grabbing my arm. "Clara, we have to run right now."

May you like

"We're not running," I said, a fierce, unbreakable smile touching my lips. "Marcus just hijacked the main auditorium stage screen upstairs. Arthur Vance is about to get a very public history lesson."

Dragging Julian behind me, we sprinted out of the holding cell and headed straight for the service elevator leading directly up to the main convention stage.
