Chapter 6 - Into the Shadows

The neon sign of a rundown 24-hour diner flickered through the heavy rain pelting my windshield. It was three days after our escape, and we were four hundred miles away from our old life, holed up in a dusty motel room on the outskirts of Kansas City.
Chloe was fast asleep on the lumpy double bed, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit. I sat at the wobbly laminate table in the corner of the room, the glow of my laptop screen illuminating my exhausted, hollow-eyed face.
For seventy-two hours, I had analyzed the contents of Julian’s stolen thumb drive. The data was a labyrinth of encrypted files, shell corporations, and clandestine intelligence operations. But buried deep within the financial ledgers was a smoking gun: a paper trail linking the Directorate's black-site funding directly to a multinational conglomerate called Vanguard Logistics. And at the helm of Vanguard Logistics was a man named Arthur Vance.
Arthur Vance.
My breath caught. That was the name on Eleanor's original personnel file. He wasn't just a corporate executive; he was the primary architect of the entire human-conditioning program that had created Julian. And worse—he was currently scheduled to speak at a private international tech summit in Seattle next week.
If I went to the local police, they would laugh me out of the precinct or, worse, hand me right back over to the Directorate agents who were undoubtedly scouring the country for us. The law couldn't touch men like Arthur Vance.
To beat them, I couldn't play by their rules. I had to become a ghost they couldn't see coming.
I picked up a burner phone I had purchased with cash at a truck stop outside of Denver. My fingers hovered over the keypad. I dialed a number from the encrypted files—a rogue intelligence broker who had been blacklisted by the Directorate five years prior for attempting to expose their domestic surveillance programs.
The phone rang twice before a raspy, cautious voice answered. "Speak."
"My name is Clara Sterling," I said, my voice steady, stripped of all the fear that had paralyzed me days before. "I have the Vanguard ledger, the biometric synchronization codes for Subject Seven, and the exact offshore routing numbers for Arthur Vance’s slush funds."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. "Who gave you that data? If you're a Directorate plant, I'll hang up right now."
May you like
"I'm not a plant," I replied coldly, glancing over at Chloe sleeping peacefully on the bed. "I'm a mother whose life was stolen by your little boys' club. And I'm ready to burn the whole empire to the ground. Are you in, or do I call someone else?"
A low, humorless chuckle echoed through the receiver. "Well, Mrs. Sterling... welcome to the resistance. Tell me where you are. We have a lot of work to do."
