Chapter 3 - The Men in Charcoal Suits

The backyard fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Even the children stopped splashing, sensing the sudden, oppressive terror gripping the adults. The man leading the pair flashed a leather-bound badge so quickly I could barely make out the federal seal, though the word INVESTIGATOR stood out in bold, sharp lettering.
"Julian Sterling? Eleanor Vance?" the lead man asked, his voice flat, devoid of any human warmth. "We need you both to come with us right now. Do not attempt to run, and do not reach for any phones."
Julian’s knees buckled slightly. He caught himself against the edge of the patio table, knocking over a pitcher of lemonade that shattered into yellow shards on the concrete. "Who sent you? I thought we had an arrangement. I thought the money was transferred offshore yesterday!"
"The arrangement is void, Mr. Sterling," the second agent replied, stepping smoothly behind Julian to block any path of escape. "When your stepmother decided to strip down at a public neighborhood pool party and let a toddler expose your little secret to the world, security protocols were automatically breached. Federal intelligence flagged the biological match signature instantly."
I stood frozen between them, feeling like a ghost in my own home. "Federal intelligence? Biological match? What are you talking about? Who are you people?"
The lead agent looked at me with a gaze so cold it chilled me to the bone. "Mrs. Sterling, your husband is not who you think he is. Nor is the woman you call your stepmother. For the past six years, you have been living inside a meticulously constructed illusion."
"An illusion?" I stammered, looking wildly at Julian, who now looked like a trapped animal cornered by hounds. "We’ve been married for seven years! We have a daughter! We met at an architectural firm in Chicago!"
"Chicago was a cover story," Eleanor sobbed openly now, her mascara running in black streaks down her flushed cheeks, ruining the illusion of the wealthy, aloof stepmother she had maintained for a decade and a half. "Clara, sweetie... I'm so sorry. I never wanted you to find out like this. But Julian and I... we were never stepmother and step-daughter in the traditional sense. We were handlers."
The world seemed to tilt on its axis. My ears hummed with a deafening white noise. Handlers? What kind of insane conspiracy movie had my life suddenly morphed into?
"Mommy?"
A small, trembling hand tugged at the hem of my dress. I looked down. Chloe was crying silently, her big eyes filled with a terror no four-year-old should ever experience. I scooped her up into my arms, pressing her face into my shoulder so she couldn't see the men in suits or the pale, trembling wreckage of her father.
"Get off my property," I snarled at the agents, adrenaline overriding my shock. "Get off my lawn, or I swear to God I will call the local police right now."
The lead agent sighed, reaching into his pocket, not for handcuffs, but for a heavy manila folder stamped with a bright red CLASSIFIED stamp. He didn't hand it to me; he held it open just long enough for me to read the top document.
My eyes scanned the paper, and the air left my lungs in a single, violent gasp. It was a birth certificate—not mine, but Julian’s. And right beneath his name, listed under "Primary Genetic Donor and Project Overseer," was Eleanor Vance.

Only, she wasn't my stepmother.
She was his biological mother. And my entire marriage was a lie engineered from the very beginning.
