Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

As the evening wound down and the rest of the family departed for the night, Daniel and I stayed behind to help Evelyn tidy up the study.
The fire in the hearth was dying down to a bed of glowing embers, casting a cozy warmth over the room. Evelyn sat in her favorite wingback chair, looking tired but deeply at peace.
"Are you warm enough, Evelyn?" I asked, draping a cashmere shawl over her shoulders.
"Never warmer, my dear," she murmured, patting my hand. "My work here is nearly finished. The foundation is in good hands, the family has found its soul, and my great-granddaughter knows her own worth."
She looked up at us both, her eyes filled with an infinite, quiet pride.
"Promise me one thing, Daniel. Promise me, Amanda."

"Anything, Evelyn," Daniel said softly.
"Never let this family forget where true wealth comes from," she whispered, her eyelids growing heavy. "It’s not in the marble floors, or the chandeliers, or the bank accounts. It’s in the people who heal the world when it breaks."
