Chapter 9 - Rebuilding Home

Two weeks later, the morning sun broke brightly over the quiet neighborhood of Oak Ridge.
The dark, heavy clouds that had hung over Elm Street for months were gone, replaced by a clear, vibrant blue sky. The front door of 412 Elm Street was open, letting in the cool, fresh breeze of late spring.
In the living room, Lily sat on the sofa surrounded by bright pink pillows. Her hair was growing back neatly over a small, fading scar on the side of her head. She was laughing, her cheeks full of color and health, as she colored in a giant drawing book.
Daniel stood in the kitchen, making fresh pancakes. He looked entirely transformed. The dark circles under his eyes were gone, his posture was straight, and for the first time in years, he was humming a song while he worked.
The doorbell rang.
Lily looked up excitedly. "I'll get it!"
"Walk, don't run, sweetie!" Daniel called out with a warm smile.
Lily opened the front door to reveal Amelia Grant standing on the porch. She was dressed casually in a soft blue sweater and jeans, carrying a large box wrapped in bright yellow paper and tied with a ribbon.
"Hi, Lily!" Amelia said with a warm, beaming smile. "It's so good to see you up and moving around!"
"Ms. Amelia!" Lily cheered, wrapping her arms around Amelia’s waist. "Daddy made pancakes!"
Amelia laughed, hugging the little girl back gently. "That sounds wonderful."
Daniel walked into the entryway, setting down a dish towel. "Amelia! Come in, please. You didn't have to bring anything."
"Nonsense," Amelia said, stepping inside and handing the yellow box to Lily. "This is a recovery present for the bravest girl I know."
Lily eagerly tore open the paper to reveal a state-of-the-art digital art tablet with a stylus. Her eyes widened with absolute joy. "No way! I can draw pictures on a computer now?!"
"Just like your dad builds things on computers," Amelia smiled. "Go try it out."
"Thank you, Ms. Amelia!" Lily squealed, running off to the living room table to unpack her new toy.
Daniel looked at Amelia, his expression filled with deep affection and respect. "You really spoil her, you know that?"
"She deserves to be spoiled," Amelia said softly. She turned to face Daniel, pulling an official corporate document from her handbag. "I brought some news from the board."
Daniel’s expression grew curious. "Good news or bad news?"
"Julian Vance wanted to enforce your old working hours," Amelia joked. "So I restructured the entire engineering division. The board unanimously approved the creation of a new position: Chief Systems Architect and Remote Infrastructure Director."
She handed the document to Daniel.
"Full flexibility. Flexible hours. You work from home whenever you need to be with Lily, and your attendance at after-hours corporate events is strictly optional—by order of the CEO."
Daniel read through the contract. The salary was higher, the security was absolute, and the work-life balance was explicitly designed around his duties as a father.

"Amelia..." Daniel said, holding the paper, his voice filled with emotion. "I don't even know how to repay you for all of this."
"You already have, Daniel," Amelia said gently, looking out toward the living room where Lily was happily drawing a bright sun on her new tablet. "You reminded me of why we do what we do. Business isn't just about profits and quarterly reports. It's about taking care of the people who make it all possible."
