Chapter 8 - The Battle for Lily

At 6:00 AM, the surgical team entered the room. Dr. Harrison Vance, a world-renowned neurosurgeon with grey hair and calm, confident eyes, nodded reassuringly to Daniel as they prepared Lily for transport to the operating theater.
"Daddy?" Lily murmured sleepily as the nurses gently wheeled her bed toward the double doors. "Are you going to be here when I wake up?"
Daniel walked alongside the gurney, holding her small hand tightly. "I'll be right outside those doors, baby. The whole time. When you open your eyes, I'll be the very first thing you see."
"Will the monsters in my head be gone?" she asked softly.
"Gone forever," Daniel promised, kissing her forehead. "Dr. Vance is going to fix them all. You just take a sweet sleep."
"Okay," Lily whispered, her eyes fluttering closed under the mild sedative. "I love you, Daddy."
"I love you more than all the stars in the sky."
The doors swung shut, and the surgical light above the operating room flashed red: SURGERY IN PROGRESS.
The next four hours were an agonizing endurance test. Daniel paced the floor of the waiting room, unable to sit still. Every time the double doors opened, his heart leaped into his throat, expecting the worst.
Amelia stayed right beside him. She sat on a vinyl sofa with her laptop open, managing the corporate deployment crisis in real-time. With the encryption key Daniel provided, she personally guided the engineering team back in Cleveland through the final launch phase.
At 9:30 AM, Amelia looked up from her screen and smiled. "The network migration is complete, Daniel. Zero downtime. Client data fully secured. The board just signed off on the new contract."
Daniel looked at her, exhausted but deeply grateful. "Thank you, Amelia. For everything."
"Don't thank me yet," she said softly, pointing toward the hallway. "Here comes the man you should be looking for."
Dr. Vance walked through the surgical doors, pulling off his surgical mask and blue cap. His face was tired, but his eyes were bright.
Daniel rushed forward, his breath catching in his chest. "Doctor? How is she?"
Dr. Vance took a deep breath, looked at Daniel, and smiled broadly. "Mr. Carter, your daughter is a fighter. The vascular tangle was complex, but we successfully isolated and sealed the abnormal vessels without any damage to the surrounding brain tissue."
Daniel swallowed hard, his hands trembling. "Is... is she going to be okay?"
"The procedure was a complete success," Dr. Vance announced proudly. "The pressure is gone. The risk of future bleeding is entirely eliminated. Lily is going to live a full, healthy, normal life."
Daniel collapsed into a chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath as if he had been holding his breath for three years. Amelia stood beside him, clapping her hands over her mouth as tears of relief filled her eyes as well.

"She’s in recovery right now," Dr. Vance added. "You can see her in about twenty minutes."
Daniel looked up at the ceiling of the hospital waiting room, tears streaming freely down his face. For the first time since Rachel died, the crushing weight on his chest was entirely gone.
