Chapter 7 - The CEO's Decision

Amelia pulled a sleek leather portfolio from her coat and laid it out on the bedside table next to Lily's monitors.

"What is that?" Daniel asked, his voice barely above a breath.

"This is an emergency executive directive, signed by me as CEO and majority stakeholder of Granton Systems," Amelia said, flipping open the folder to reveal several official legal documents. "Effective retroactively to 5:00 AM yesterday morning, your resignation is rejected and officially nullified."

Daniel blinked, stunned. "Rejection? Amelia, I submitted it—"

"You submitted a resignation that was never accepted," Amelia interrupted firmly. "Instead, you have been officially placed on fully paid medical leave under our executive hardship program. Effective immediately, Granton Systems is reclassifying Dr. Harrison Vance and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center as primary specialized network providers under our top-tier corporate medical policy."

She pointed to a stamped signature at the bottom of the page.

"The company’s internal emergency health fund has cleared the entire cost of Lily’s surgery, medical transport, and post-operative care. The three hundred thousand dollars you wired from your personal accounts and retirement buyout has already been refunded directly back to your bank account."

Daniel felt the floor beneath him tilt. He grabbed the edge of the bed frame to steady himself. "You... you paid for the surgery? The entire thing?"

"Granton Systems paid for it," Amelia corrected with a small, compassionate smile. "Because no father should ever have to choose between his child’s life and his own survival. You are not alone, Daniel. You never were. You just never let us in."

Daniel covered his face with both hands, his body shaking as years of unspoken grief, exhaustion, and overwhelming terror finally broke through his stoic defenses. He wept quietly beside his daughter's bed—not out of despair, but out of absolute, dizzying relief.

Amelia stood quietly beside him, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder, letting him let go of the burden he had carried in solitary silence for three long years.

After a few minutes, Daniel wiped his eyes, looking at Amelia with a depth of gratitude that words could never express. "Why? Why would you do this for me? I'm just an engineer."

"You're not just an engineer, Daniel," Amelia said softly, looking over at Lily's sleeping face. "You're the heart of our company. And to this little girl, you're the entire world. A company that doesn't protect its people when they need it most isn't a company worth running."

She pulled a tablet from her bag and opened a secure network connection. "Now, if you don't mind... your daughter’s surgery starts in two hours. Give me that cryptographic key so I can execute this server deployment from the waiting room while we wait for her to come out."

Daniel smiled through his tears, reached into his pocket, and handed her the small silver flash drive. "The master password is her birthday."
