Chapter 3 - The Interrogation Room and the First Confession

The sterile white walls of the federal holding facility hummed with the low, continuous drone of fluorescent lighting. I sat in a private viewing room adjacent to the main interrogation suites, wrapped in a warm hospital blanket. My doctor had cleared me after an exhaustive ultrasound—our miracle baby had weathered the shock remarkably well, tucked safely away in a protective cocoon of fluid, though my bruised ribs and abdomen thined out a dull, throbbing ache with every breath.
Through the one-way mirror, I watched Special Agent Vance slide a thick manila folder across the cold steel table.
Julian sat opposite her. His expensive designer suit was rumpled, his hair disheveled, and the arrogant smirk that had defined his entire life was completely gone. His hands, cuffed to a bolted-down loop on the table, trembled visibly.
"Look at these, Mr. Vance," Agent Vance’s voice filtered clearly through the audio speaker in the viewing room. "This is a wire transfer confirmation dated four months ago. Three million dollars shifted from the employee health trust fund directly into a Cayman Islands shell company named V&C Holdings. The 'C' stands for Chloe, doesn't it?"
Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. "I... I don't know anything about that. My father handled the finances. I'm just a VP of marketing! I sign papers when he tells me to sign them!"
"That's funny," Agent Vance replied smoothly, flipping open another document. "Because every single one of these digital authorizations was executed using your personal biometric login and your private IP address from your townhouse. Furthermore, your mistress Chloe has already signed a preliminary cooperation agreement in the next room. She provided us with text messages where you bragged about using company funds to buy her penthouse."
Julian slammed his cuffed hands against the table, the metal ring rattling loudly. "She's lying! Chloe doesn't know anything! This is a setup! Clara did this! My wife—my ex-wife—she hacked my computer!"
"Your wife," Agent Vance corrected coldly, leaning forward, "is a licensed forensic expert who legally accessed files stored on shared home servers while performing her duties as a corporate compliance auditor. Furthermore, she turned over twenty-two gigabytes of encrypted backups that prove you and your father have been systematically looting Vance Enterprises for over three years."
Julian slumped back into his chair, the fight instantly draining out of him. Tears welled in his eyes, not from remorse, but from sheer, unadulterated panic. "How long? How long am I looking at?"
"With the federal fraud charges, money laundering, and the assault charge involving a pregnant woman?" Agent Vance tilted her head. "If you cooperate fully, pin point your father's primary offshore accounts, and testify regarding the embezzlement conspiracy, the U.S. Attorney’s office might recommend a sentence of twelve to fifteen years. If you don't? You're looking at thirty."
In the viewing room, I took a slow sip of warm chamomile tea provided by a sympathetic nurse. The door behind me clicked open, and my attorney, Marcus Sterling—a silver-haired bulldog of a lawyer whom I had secretly retained six months prior—stepped inside.
"How are you holding up, Clara?" Marcus asked quietly, pulling up a chair beside me.
"I'm surviving, Marcus," I replied, keeping my eyes fixed on the glass. "Is the asset freeze holding?"
"Absolute airtight," Marcus confirmed with a faint, satisfied smile. "Every single bank account, stock portfolio, real estate holding, and luxury asset belonging to Arthur and Beatrice Vance has been frozen by federal injunction. By tomorrow morning, Vance Enterprises will be placed under federal receivership. Your divorce and asset division filings are already time-stamped and ready for the judge's signature as soon as the market opens."
"And the prenuptial agreement?" I asked.
"Voided due to fraudulent concealment of assets and criminal enterprise," Marcus said, tapping a leather-bound folder. "Clara, under the terms we drafted, not only will you walk away with complete custody and a massive settlement from the liquidated corporate assets, but the court is also going to award you full ownership of the family estate in Malibu. The Vances are officially destitute."

I nodded slowly, watching through the glass as Julian buried his face in his cuffed hands and began to weep openly. It was a pathetic display from a man who, less than three hours ago, had sneered at me as "barren trash" while his parents applauded his violence.
"Let him cry," I whispered softly. "He has a long, cold decade ahead of him to practice."
