Chapter 1 - The Broken Watch and the Raid

At eight months pregnant with our miracle baby, I watched my husband walk into our baby shower accompanied by his 22-year-old mistress. My demand for them to leave was met with a direct punch to my stomach, which knocked me backward into the gift table. "She's carrying the real heir, you barren trash," he sneered, while his wealthy parents stood there and actually clapped.

With agonizing pain ripping through me, I lay on the floor clutching my belly, yet I still forced a bloody smile. Unbeknownst to them, I had already spent months poisoning his father's company from within, setting up an FBI raid timed precisely for 2:00 PM. Looking down at my shattered watch, I saw the time was 1:59.

Only a moment before, the scent of fresh flowers and vanilla frosting had filled the room. Underneath silver balloons floating above a cupcake tower spelling WELCOME, LITTLE ONE, about half the guests still held pale blue paper plates when the front door opened and Julian entered, Chloe tucked close to his side.

Polished and twenty-two, she wore the smug, satisfied grin of someone who knew the room belonged to her before she even stepped inside. Beatrice, Julian's mother, tapped her glass with a spoon and announced, "At last, a woman who can give this family what it deserves."

I placed my hand on my belly.

"Get out," I told them. "Both of you."

Before anyone else could react, Julian's face shifted. With a tightened jaw and a flash of his cuff beneath the chandelier, his fist suddenly drove forward. The breath was completely knocked out of me by the impact. Tattering against the gift table's edge, I sent ribbons, boxes, cupcakes, and a single silver balloon spilling across the hardwood floor.

Everything in the room instantly froze. One guest held a paper plate at a crooked angle. Down the side of the collapsed cupcake tower, frosting slowly dripped. Near the entrance, someone kept their eyes fixed on the floor, behaving as though looking at me might force them to intervene.

No one made a move.

While waiting for a sign of movement from the baby, I wrapped both arms around my stomach. A terrifying, intense wave of pain rolled through my abdomen. But then, beneath my palm, a tiny kick came, and I clung to that small reassurance with all my strength.

"Julian," I gasped. "How could you?"

He straightened his cufflinks as though I had merely spilled a drink on him. "You embarrassed me."

Chloe stroked her flat stomach and pressed closer to his side. "She really shouldn't have yelled, Jules."

Stepping forward, Arthur Vance exuded the calm, expensive air unique to men shielded by vast wealth. "Enough drama, Clara. You were always too emotional for this family."

Next, Beatrice began to clap.

A single clap.

Then Arthur joined in.

In that very moment, a stillness settled deep within me—it wasn't the baby, nor was it the terror, but rather the final shred of hope that these people could ever recognize basic human decency as it bled right in front of them on their floor.

Julian glared down at me, sneering, "She's carrying the real heir, you barren trash."

Tears and begging were what he anticipated. He thought he was dealing with the invisible wife who had spent fourteen months sitting silently through charity lunches, corporate dinners, and late-night calls, ignored like a piece of furniture while Arthur's executives talked about shell accounts.

Instead, he received a smile.

A tight look came over Julian's face.

He had no idea I had made copies of every single illegal ledger I could get my hands on. He was completely unaware that I had tracked the shell companies Arthur utilized to transfer funds between accounts. He remained oblivious to the fact that federal investigators had verified my evidence and scheduled a raid for this very afternoon.

Above all, the reason I had fought for the baby shower to start before two remained a complete mystery to him.

When I crashed into the table, my watch had shattered. A small crack split the glass, freezing the second hand at exactly 1:59.

Meanwhile, the clock on the wall across the room continued to tick.

My eyes moved from Arthur to Beatrice, shifted to Chloe, and finally settled back on my husband.

"Julian," I whispered, my voice carrying through the silent room, "you really should have checked who you married..."

The minute hand clicked onto the twelve.

Immediately, three heavy knocks rattled the front doors.
