Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The heavy oak door didn’t just open; it was thrust open with terrifying, military precision. The decorative silver balloons near the entrance trembled as a wall of dark-suited federal agents poured into the sunlit ballroom. Their boots pounded against the imported hardwood floors, shattering the fragile, insulated illusion of elite untouchability that the Vance family had spent decades constructing.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!"

The voice echoed sharply, cutting through the horrified gasps of high-society guests who instantly scattered like frightened starlings. Champagne flutes dropped, shattering into glittering shards, while socialites tripped over designer gowns in their desperate scramble toward the French doors.

Julian’s smug expression dissolved instantly, replaced by a pale, hollow shock. He turned his head sharply toward his father, whose face had instantly lost all its color.

"Arthur... what is this?" Julian stammered, his voice losing its arrogant edge. "What are these people doing here?"

Arthur Vance didn't answer immediately. His jaw twitched, and his cold, calculating eyes darted from the lead federal agent to me—still lying on the floor, cradling my bump, with blood staining my white dress. For the first time in his life, the patriarch of Vance Enterprises looked genuinely panicked.

Special Agent Vance—no relation, a sharp-eyed woman with a tactical vest and an unyielding expression—strode directly past the frozen crowd. She didn't look at Beatrice, who was clutching her pearl necklace in sheer horror, nor did she glance at Chloe, who had frozen mid-step, her hand still resting pathetically on her flat stomach. The lead agent stopped right beside me.

"Mrs. Vance," the agent said, her voice softening just a fraction as she knelt down. "Are you alright? Do we need an ambulance?"

"My baby," I whispered, tears finally breaking free, though my mind remained razor-sharp. "They... he struck me. But the baby... I felt a kick. Please, get paramedics, but make sure they don't leave."

"Medics are right outside," Agent Vance nodded firmly, signaling two agents behind her. "Secure the perimeter. No executives leave this room. Arrest Arthur Vance and Julian Vance for corporate fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice."

"You can't do this!" Arthur roared, stepping forward with his chest puffed out, reverting instantly to his accustomed posture of supreme authority. "Do you know who I am? I demand to see a warrant! This is harassment! We are major donors to—"

"You're a major criminal," Agent Vance interrupted coldly, pulling a thick stack of folded papers from her vest pocket and unfolding them directly in front of his face. "Arthur Vance, you are under arrest. Here is your federal warrant, signed by Judge Harrison, based on the comprehensive financial evidence provided by your company's internal compliance officer."

Arthur froze. His eyes bulged as he read the heading. He slowly turned his head, his gaze locking onto me with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You..." Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and blind fury. "You little parasite. You did this."

Julian stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Clara? Compliance officer? What are you talking about? You don't even work! You stay home! You're just... you're nothing!"

"I am a licensed forensic accountant, Julian," I said, my voice steady despite the searing pain in my abdomen as two agents gently helped me up into a sitting position against the remains of the gift table. "Before your father forced me to sign a non-disclosure agreement and quit my firm to play the quiet trophy wife, I was auditing international conglomerates. Did you really think I spent fourteen months sitting silently at those dinners just eating canapés? I was photographing your offshore accounts, copying your father's encrypted hard drives, and mapping every single shell company you used to embezzle pension funds from your own workers."

Chloe finally found her voice, stepping back in absolute terror. "Jules, make them stop! Make them go away! I don't want to be involved in this!"

Julian reached out to grab her arm, but a federal agent stepped squarely between them, clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around Julian's wrists with a sharp, metallic snap.

"Chloe," I said, looking up at the frightened twenty-two-year-old with a cold, pitying smile. "You wanted the real heir and the Vance fortune? Congratulations. You're about to inherit a federal prison sentence for conspiracy and assisting in asset concealment, because every single dollar Julian spent on your luxury apartments and designer bags was wired directly from Vance Enterprises' embezzled accounts. Enjoy your prize."

Chloe let out a piercing shriek as another agent gently, but firmly, guided her arms behind her back as well.

As the paramedics rushed through the shattered front doors with a stretcher, lifting me gently onto it, I looked back one last time. Beatrice was weeping hysterically, clutching at her expensive cashmere coat as armed agents escorted her husband and son out in handcuffs.

The nursery behind them was ruined—balloons popping, cupcakes crushed on the floor, the banner reading WELCOME, LITTLE ONE hanging crookedly in the chaos. But as the medics wheeled me out into the warm afternoon sunlight toward the waiting ambulance, I placed a hand softly on my belly.

My baby was safe. And the empire built on cruelty and corruption was finally crumbling to dust.
