Chapter 6 - Secrets of the Matriarch

With William’s full cooperation, the case against Margaret and Britney moved with devastating speed. But Margaret Vance was not a woman who would go down quietly.

A week after New Year's, I was picking Khloe up from her after-school art class. As we walked out toward my car, a sleek, silver sedan pulled up to the curb. The tinted window rolled down, revealing Margaret’s face behind a pair of oversized designer sunglasses.

"Khloe," Margaret called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Sweetheart, come here. Grandma has a present for you."

Khloe froze, instinctively stepping behind my legs. She gripped my coat, her little body trembling.

I stepped forward, blocking Margaret’s view of my daughter. "Get away from her, Margaret. You are legally barred from contacting us."

Margaret took off her sunglasses, her eyes flashing with venom. "You think you've won, don't you? You think you can steal my husband, my family, and my reputation? You’re a nobody. A gold-digger who poisoned my son’s mind."

"I didn't have to poison anything, Margaret," I said, my voice steady and cold. "You did that all by yourself when you decided to steal from a child. Now roll up your window and drive away before I call the police. I have our restraining order in my purse, and I won't hesitate to use it."

Margaret sneered, but she saw the determination in my eyes. She knew she had no power here. With a screech of tires, she sped away, leaving behind a cloud of exhaust.

When we got home, I immediately called Andrew and our lawyer. We added the incident to the growing list of Margaret’s violations.

That evening, Andrew sat with Khloe in her bedroom. They were building a massive LEGO castle together.

"Dad?" Khloe asked, fitting a blue plastic brick onto a tower. "Is Grandma going to jail?"

Andrew paused, holding a LEGO piece. "I don't know, sweetie. She made some very bad choices, and the judge is going to decide what the right punishment is. But you don't have to worry about her anymore. She can't hurt us, and she can't take anything from you ever again."

"Good," Khloe said, dusting her hands. "Because I like our family better anyway. It’s much quieter."

Andrew smiled, leaning over to kiss the top of her head. "Me too, kiddo. Me too."
