Chapter 10 - The Sweetest Inheritance

Exactly one year later, Christmas Eve arrived.

Our house was filled with the warm, rich scent of pine, cinnamon, and roasted turkey. The dining table was beautifully set, but this year, the atmosphere was completely different.

Sitting around the table were William, looking happier and healthier than he had in decades, Aunt Denise, Connor, and a few of our closest, truest friends.

Khloe was running around the room, showing off her latest painting—a beautiful canvas of a bright, sunlit forest. Connor was cheering her on, offering constructive critiques with the pride of a real older cousin.

William stood up, raising his glass of sparkling cider. The room quieted down, but there was no tension, no fear, no waiting for the other shoe to drop.

"I’d like to make a toast," William said, looking around the room, his eyes lingering lovingly on Khloe, then on Andrew, and finally on me. "A year ago, our family was broken. We were living in a house built on lies, pride, and cruelty. But thanks to the courage of my son, and the strength of this beautiful family, we rebuilt. We learned what really matters."

He raised his glass higher, looking directly at Khloe.

"I am incredibly proud of everyone in this room," William said, a thick tear rolling down his weathered cheek. "But most of all, I am proud of my granddaughter, Khloe. You showed us what grace looks like. Merry Christmas, everyone."

"Merry Christmas!" the table cheered in unison.

Khloe beamed, her smile radiating pure, unadulterated joy. She looked over at me and Andrew, and under the table, she reached out and gave my knee a tight, loving squeeze.

I'm here. We are safe. We are home.
