Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Caldera

The sound of bones snapping was accompanied by a howl of agony. The enforcer dropped his weapon, stumbling backward into the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor.
Hale didn't miss her chance. She dove for her dropped pistol, rolling onto her back as the second gunman opened fire. The tactical vest took two of Hale’s rounds, but the force of the impacts threw the gunman off balance, his rifle fire tearing into the ceiling. Hale fired a third time, finding the unarmored gap beneath his helmet. The gunman collapsed into the shattered glass.
Sarah didn't look back. She lunged at Arthur, her fingers tearing at the nylon zip-ties binding his wrists. "Arthur, we have to go! Now!"
"The safe..." Arthur wheezed, pointing to a hidden panel behind the ruined bookshelf. "The physical ledger... it's not here. I moved it to the safe deposit box at the Federal Reserve across the street... I knew they’d come here..."
The enforcer, clutching his broken wrist, was screaming into his lapel radio. "Backup to the 14th floor! Eliminate them!"
Hale grabbed Sarah and Arthur, hauling the elderly attorney to his feet. "The elevator is burned. We take the fire stairs."
They scrambled out of the office, pulling Emma from the utility closet. The young girl didn't ask questions; she grabbed her mother’s hand, her small face set with a fierce determination that mirrored Sarah's own.
They plunged down the concrete stairwell just as the heavy security doors at the end of the hall were kicked open by a fresh squad of Caldera contractors. Bullets pinged off the steel railings above them, throwing sparks into the dim stairwell.
They exited into the lower loading dock, the air cool and damp. Hale’s supervisor’s truck was parked outside, but as they approached the exit gate, a massive black armored SUV lurked in the shadow of the building opposite.
The passenger window rolled down.
Inside sat a man Sarah recognized instantly: Marcus Vance—no relation to Arthur, but the CEO of Caldera Air Logistics. A man whose face was regularly featured on the covers of global business magazines.
"Sarah," Marcus said through the open window, his voice amplified by a megaphone. "You’ve caused a significant delay in our third-quarter distributions. The airport incident was unfortunate, but it can easily be blamed on a lone actor. Let’s not make this harder than it needs to be. Give me the cryptographic key, and I will ensure your daughter has a very long, very comfortable life in a country of your choosing."

Sarah stepped in front of Emma, shielding her from Marcus's cold gaze. "You blew up an airport terminal, Marcus. You killed innocent people just to protect your offshore bank accounts."
"Innocent people are an abstraction in global logistics, Sarah," Marcus replied smoothly. "What matters is the flow of goods. And right now, you are a dam in that flow."
