Chapter 6 - Trapped in the Grid

Hale breached the doorway first, her weapon raised. "Port Authority Police! Drop your weapons!"
The response was instantaneous. A burst of automatic gunfire tore through the drywall, showering them with plaster dust. Hale threw herself behind a marble pillar, returning fire with three precise shots that shattered a display case of antique law books.
Sarah crawled along the floor, using the overturned desks as cover. Through the smoke and chaos, she saw Arthur. He was tied to his executive chair, his shirt soaked in sweat and blood, but he was alive. Standing over him was a man in a bespoke gray suit—not a cheap mercenary, but a high-level executive enforcer for Caldera.
"Sarah!" Arthur gasped, his voice choked with pain. "Don't give it to them! The entire network... it's all in the offshore..."
The man in the suit grabbed Arthur by the hair, pulling his head back and pressing a compact pistol to his temple. "Step out into the open, Sarah, or Mr. Vance’s retirement plan gets cut very short."
Sarah stood up from behind a leather sofa, her hands raised. Her face was pale, but her eyes were steady. "I’m here. Let him go. He doesn't have the key. I do."
The man smiled, a cold, professional expression that didn't reach his eyes. "Smart girl. The board was very impressed with your efficiency when you worked for us. It’s a shame you developed a conscience. It’s such an unprofitable trait."
From behind the pillar, Hale tried to get a clean shot, but the enforcer kept Arthur perfectly positioned as a human shield. A second gunman, wearing a tactical vest, stepped out from the adjoining conference room, his rifle trained on Hale's position.
"Drop the gun, officer," the enforcer said to Hale. "You’ve done remarkably well for a transit cop, but you're out of your depth. This isn't a robbery. This is a corporate acquisition."
Hale looked at Sarah, her jaw tight. She slowly lowered her service weapon to the carpet, sliding it away with her boot.
"Excellent," the enforcer said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black biometric scanner, tossing it onto the desk in front of Sarah. "Press your thumb to the pad, authorize the transfer of the logistics manifests to the Cayman server, and we can all conclude our business."
Sarah walked forward, her boots crunching on the glass. She looked down at the scanner. She knew that the moment she pressed her thumb, she, Arthur, and Hale would become loose ends that needed to be erased.
"The scanner requires a two-step verification," Sarah said, her voice remarkably calm. "The thumbprint only initializes the sequence. The secondary confirmation is a voice command that requires the Caldera corporate ID number of the supervisor who authorized my hiring."
The enforcer frowned, his grip on Arthur loosening slightly. "What are you talking about? The system doesn't have a voice override."
"It does if you’re trying to move the ghost fleet," Sarah said, taking a step closer to the desk, her eyes locking onto the heavy bronze scales of justice statue that sat just inches from her right hand. "The ID number is 0-4-1-2. Do you know whose ID that is?"
"Whose?" the enforcer demanded, distracted for a fraction of a second.
May you like
"Mine," Sarah whispered.
She grabbed the bronze statue and slammed it down onto the enforcer’s extended wrist.
