Chapter 6 - Severed Ties

The next morning, Mark stood behind the glass of the county jail's visitation room. Linda sat on the other side, wearing an orange jumpsuit, looking ten years older than she had the night before.

She picked up the phone. “Mark, please. You have to understand—”

“I don’t want to hear it,” Mark said, his voice dangerously low. “You poisoned my wife. You almost killed my daughter. And worse, you poisoned my son’s mind. You used a nine-year-old boy’s grief over his dead mother to try and destroy the woman who has done nothing but love him.”

“I was protecting our family!” Linda cried.

“You destroyed your place in it,” Mark replied. “You will never see me again. You will never see Ethan again. And you will never meet my daughter.”

He hung up the phone, turned his back on the glass, and walked out of the prison. The air outside was crisp and cold, but for the first time in hours, Mark felt he could breathe. The shadow his mother had cast over his home was permanently gone.
